Scott Township Resident Killed in Crash

Robert McCartney drove school buses for 12 years after retiring from Duquesne Light in the mid-1990s.

A Scott Township man who spent his retirement years driving school buses for Chartiers Valley died Monday morning when his car collided with a dump truck in Stowe Township.

According to the Allegheny County coroner’s office, 78-year-old Robert McCartney died at Ohio Valley General Hospital shortly after the crash.

McCartney’s wife of 57 years, Betty, said he spent his life working for Duquesne Light, driving bucket trucks and overseeing the dangerous electrical maintenance work on utility poles. When he retired in the mid-1990s, he decided to use his commercial driver's license to help the school district.

Betty McCartney said her husband loved driving school buses and interacting with the students before retiring from that part-time job in 2007.

“The kids all liked him, and he got a lot of thank you notes for being so nice,” she said. “He really liked them.”

He also belonged to several groups, including the Masons and Shriners Camel Wheels Patrol. Betty McCartney said her husband was originally from the Penn Hills area, but the couple called Scott Township home for the past 50 years.

William Slater II Funeral Home on Greentree Road is handling the funeral arrangements, although they were not complete by Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Allegheny County homicide detectives have charged the driver of the dump truck with vehicular homicide and multiple traffic violations after he allegedly ran a stop sign and crashed into McCartney’s vehicle. Spencer Rouse was arraigned Tuesday morning and is being held without bond at Allegheny County Jail, according to a jail supervisor.
