Work Continues on Miracle League Field

It was a special moment for everyone involved in the development of the Miracle League Field in Upper St. Clair.

Friday was a momentous morning for the people involved in the Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills.

Around 11 a.m., a team of men and a forklift raised a 500-pound bronze plate—shaped like a baseball field—honoring the people and companies who donated a large amount of money to build the baseball field designed for kids with special needs.

"It highlights what the field stands for and all the work everyone's done," said Kyle Robinson, a former Upper St. Clair Public Works employee who has volunteered his time as the field's construction manager.

More bronze plaques will be drilled underneath the field plaque, and in the two bricks walls to the left and right, in the coming days—representing others who have donated money to the project.

Dom Palombo, a longtime Upper St. Clair resident who volunteered his time to be the project's architect, said a sign reading "Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills" will be displayed above the baseball field plaque next week.

The Miracle Field is nearly complete; Finishing the restroom and storage facility, lining the parking lot, landscaping and installing the scoreboard are the main items left on the agenda. Organizers are planning for a spring ribbon-cutting ceremony.

on the Miracle Field at Upper St. Clair's in June. The custom-designed, rubberized field will allow children of all abilities to play baseball.

Three-time Major League Baseball all-star and Upper St. Clair resident Sean Casey, and his wife, Mandi, began the endeavor in 2010. With the help of the community, the Caseys raised about $1 million to cover the construction costs. Casey's Clubhouse is continuing its effort to raise money in order to maintain the Miracle Field.

"This is really going to be nice," said Robinson, with a huge smile on his face.
