Rain Gardens to the Rescue!

The Scott Conservancy is sponsoring a community education program for the general public on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, 7:00-8:00 pm at the Lodge in Scott Park. The cost to attend is just $5.00.

Rain gardens are a means to manage water year round. They function to detain water so that it gradually infiltrates into the soil, rather than flooding areas. When correctly installed, rain gardens serve to link the built environment of paving and buildings with the natural environment.

Roxanne Swann of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania will be our presenter for this program which includes information on constructing a rain garden as well as a list of appropriate plants. Rain barrels will also be on the agenda.

When did you last test your lawn or garden soil? Penn State Soil Test Kits will be available for purchase this evening. Free take-home literature will be on hand covering some general topics of interest such as edible landscaping, lawn management, composting, and native pollinators.

Feel free to invite friends and family to join you at this event. Adults only, please.

Registration is requested so that adequate seating can be provided. Registration will close when the limit is reached, so respond early. Please email - scottconservepa@yahoo.com - or call 412-788-1361. Supply your name and contact information - email address or telephone number or both. The $5.00 fee will be collected at the door.

To get to the Lodge, follow the road through Scott Park to the large parking lot at the top of hill next to the basketball court. The Lodge is on your right.
