South Fayette Football set for Xfinity On Demand

Comcast Corporation today announced that its XFINITY High School Sports Game of the Week will be available for the first time in High Definition during the 2013 season as part of a 12-week WPIAL schedule that includes three playoff games and teams from every WPIAL classification.

Among the games on the 2013 schedule is South Fayette's Sept. 27 game against Seton-La Salle.

Comcast’s 11th consecutive season of local high school football coverage kicks off with the August 30 Class AAAA opener between Mt. Lebanon and North Allegheny, a rematch of last season’s quarterfinal game won by North Allegheny. The Tigers, ranked 23rd nationally by USA Today, are three-time defending WPIAL champions who also won the PIAA title in 2012 and are 54-4 over the last four seasons.

Comcast’s XFINITY High School Sports Game of the Week schedule features 13 playoff teams from last season, including Class AA runnerup Washington, led by WPIAL 2012 rushing leader Shai McKenzie. Among other 2012 playoff teams set to appear this season are Central Valley, Montour, Hampton, Seton La-Salle, South Fayette, North Catholic, Avonworth, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair and Woodland Hills.

Comcast’s community support is clearly demonstrated by their long-standing support of interscholastic athletics,” said WPIAL Executive Director Tim O’Malley. “The availability of the regular season and playoff games in high definition will add to the color and excitement of high school football for participants, their families, and fans.”

All Xfinity TV subscribers with Digital Starter and above packages get free access to the XFINITY High School Sports Game of the Week through the “Get Local” and “Sports” folders on their On Demand menu beginning the day after the game is played. It’s the perfect weekend opportunity for fans who missed the game, simply want to relive it or who want to catch up on rivals or teams that are creating buzz around the WPIAL.

Comcast’s talented high school sports programming team, twice nominated for regional Emmy Awards, includes venerable play-by-play man Chris Shovlin, superb color analyst Ellis Cannon and, new to the broadcast this year, sideline reporter Kati Lightholder. In addition, former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch will join the team for the start of the WPIAL playoffs.

Coverage includes halftime band performances, Fan of the Game interviews, features on the local flavors at the concession stand and the Comcast Spirit Award.

The Comcast Spirit Award recognizes the teams whose fans, marching bands and cheerleaders show the most school spirit and is based on the amount of Comcast signage and lively cheers, use of school colors and crowd energy. Winners are chosen and presented with a specially engraved trophy during each game.
