Colts On The Ball

With a 4-1 record, the Colts are certainly looking to have a promising football season.

With a 4-1 record, the Colts are certainly looking to have a promising season. Right now, the Colts are on a four-game winning streak, and they plan on continuing to win each upcoming game. Kevin Gillen, senior slotback on the football team, states, “Every game is important to win. We want to win them all.” The Colts have high hopes of making the playoffs, maybe even becoming WPIAL champions.

The Colts have taken their section by storm, so far winning the games needed to make playoffs. At this rate, the dream of becoming WPIAL championships doesn’t seem too far off.  After their 49-14 loss at Montour, the team has really stepped it up by winning 4 consecutive games.  CV took their first victory of the season against Trinity, 37-14. The week after the Colts destroyed Elizabeth Forward 43-0. Then, during the Homecoming game the Colts faced fierce competition against Bethel Park. It was back and forth the entire game, until the last play. The Hawks were on the 1 yard line when Anthony Cinello, quarterback, fumbled the ball and was pushed back to the 5. Colts celebrated their 3rd victory with a 24-17 win. Most recently, the Colts celebrated their fourth win against Belle Vernon last week, 36-10.

I had an opportunity to interview two seniors on the team this year, team Captain AJ Mazzarini and slot-back Kevin Gillen. Both of the boys had a positive outlook for the season.  Mazzarani and Gillen both believe that unlike previous years, the team has more “work ethic” which has resulted in great success thus far in the season. “We play more like a team. We have chemistry together,” says Gillen.  There is no doubt that the team has been improving every week. “We play one game at a time, and we prepare one game at a time,” Gillen comments. “Every week we plan according to the type of offense and defense our opponent runs. This way we can be 100% prepared for what we’re going to see on Friday night,” Mazzarini explains. Since this is both of the boys’ senior year, each had plans about how to make the most out of this final year. Mazzarini states that he has already achieved two of his goals: winning the Homecoming game and his Senior Night game.  The next step, for both of them, is to win the section and then win WPIAL’s.

This Friday there will be a fan bus to Thomas Jefferson High School. The bus costs $5 and tickets will be sold for the game, $3 at the school. Tickets at the door will be $6. Also, to ride the bus you need to get a permission slip from Mrs. Steen. Seats are limited, on a first-come, first- serve basis.  It’ll be a white out. Make sure you come show your support as CV takes on their biggest rival.  “This week against TJ is the biggest game of the year. It could possibly make our break the section for us,” states Mazzarini.
