Giant Eagle's Expansion at Virginia Manor Halted

The expansion of the Giant Eagle in Virgina Manor has hit a roadblock and no one knows why.

Giant Eagle announced last year it planned to expand its grocery store in Virginia Manor by 6,000 feet to accommodate more customers by the end of 2012.

But more than a year after that decision, which led to the closure or transfer of several other stores in the strip mall, the expansion project is delayed for a variety of reasons

A Giant Eagle spokesman said construction probably won't be completed until mid-2013. However, a company spokesman told Chartiers Valley Patch in July 2011 that they expected to complete the work by the end of 2012.

A couple of storefronts that connect to the Giant Eagle have been empty for a year and it's not clear why the expansion has been delayed.

In fact, Mt. Lebanon zoning officials told Patch.com this week that the township still has yet to receive an application to expand the grocery store. The township officials added that they weren’t aware the grocery chain was even planning a store expansion because no permit has been requested.

Company officials said last year that the store would not become another Market District, but several departments would be expanded, including produce, meats, seafood, prepared foods, health and wellness, and the pharmacy.

It also forced Starbuck’s to move farther down in the plaza and pushed Hollywood Tans to nearby Collier Town Square.
