Bethel Park Artist Adds Spice to Sugar Café

Artist Scott Hunter painted the new addition to Sugar Café's walls.

There’s a colorful new addition to the walls of , and it might seem to patrons that the mural went up overnight.

It actually took two nights—15 hours of work—for Bethel Park artist Scott Hunter to fill the wall above the lounge area with a colorful representation of Sugar Café’s retro-modern vibe.

“(Sugar Café owners) Mike and Kelly (James) were kind enough to let me be creative about it,” Hunter said. “We were looking at the space and looking for a retro image. I do a lot of collage work, and I took that approach.”

The mural features the desserts and coffee Sugar is best known for, in a retro setting that matches the café’s interior. The woman in the mural is not supposed to be James, Hunter said, but the unnamed woman seemed to fit well with the scene.

“I don’t know where she came from,” he said. “But she kind of has a crazy smile that I liked.”

Hunter said he began painting murals because he likes to paint on a large scale, and canvas doesn’t typically allow for that. His talent is for hire—Hunter already has painted a number of murals in individual homes, including children’s rooms.

He said his work is nearly always totally unique, because he works with the homeowner to fill space and create the vision they want for their homes. Examples of his work are available at his Clinker Brick Murals website.

As a student at Boston University he studied fine arts and painting. Although his fulltime job is with Fidelity Investments, he hasn’t given up on fine art.

Hunter’s fine art, including portraits, is on display at GalleriE Chiz in Shadyside and at Pennello Gallery in Cleveland. He also is available for contracted fine art and portrait work. Examples and contact information are available at his fine art website.

Painting isn’t Hunter’s fulltime gig yet, but he hopes that someday his career will take him

“Not a day passes where I think ‘Could I make that work?”” he said. “This is the path I’d like to think I’m on.”

Hunter also will be at this summer’s Three Rivers Arts Festival in June.
