Area Verizon Workers Go On Strike

Workers from nearby Verizon garage picket in Bridgeville.

Verizon workers locked in a contract dispute with the company spent Monday holding signs and picketing in Bridgeville and other places across the region.

Six workers held signs and solicited honks from passing motorists while standing in front of the central office at the corner of Washington Pike and Bower Hill Road.

Matt Biernacki, a union representative from Communications Workers of America Local 13,000, said that close to 5,000 workers are on strike across Western Pennsylvania as they protest contract negotiations they say would enact hefty concessions. He said there was a large rally in Robinson on Sunday and another one in Pittsburgh today.
