Review 'O The Week

Top stories from the past week

This week included stories about a World War II veteran finally receiving the medals he earned 65 years ago. Another popular story was about the end of an era as Chicago’s Pizzeria closed and effectively ended the Shoppes on Bower Hill. A Walgreens is planned for the defunct strip mall in Scott Township.

Also, there were stories about healthy eating habits for kids, fun games to play during St. Patrick’s Day and residents offer their concerns about the McLaughlin Run Road bridge closing in Bridgeville.

After 65 years of waiting, one local veteran finally received proper acknowledgment for his service to the nation. Ed Schneider, 87 of Bridgeville, is now able to hold the nine Bronze Star medals he earned for his service in World War II. In a twist of fate shortly after he left the military in 1946, the St. Louis warehouse that stored his service records burned to the ground. It wasn't until last November that he found the help he needed to acquire his honors.

A local pizza joint that served up slices for 21 years has closed its doors, making room for a major pharmacy chain and bringing an unceremonious end to The Shoppes on Bower Hill. Chicago’s Pizzeria & Ice Creamery, located on the southern end of a now vacant strip mall at the corner of Bower Hill Road and North Wren Drive, turned off its lights for the final time earlier this month.

Police are warning residents about several daytime burglaries that have occurred in the township and surrounding communities in recent weeks. Scott police chief James Secreet asked residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity happening in their neighborhoods, and said they may remain anonymous. Police said a total of five break-ins have been reported in the Bower Hill Road area between Mt. Lebanon, Scott and Upper St. Clair townships.

You would expect to sample bangers and mash while sipping good beer after stepping inside an Irish pub. But at Aiden’s, located just off Thoms Run Road in Collier, you’ll find all of that plus arguably the best chicken wings in the ‘burgh. Whoa, what? Delicious wings at an Irish pub? It might be hard to believe, but Aiden’s serves up wings almost the size of drumsticks with some of the most unique flavors I’ve had around town.

Over the years, our family has had many activities to celebrate this holiday, depending on my children's ages. The Irish call this "Shamrockery" that brought a lot of magic and warmed our bellies with great feasts on a cold mid-March day. I hope you enjoy them with your family as well.

The McLaughlin Run Road bridge is scheduled to close for repairs in less than two weeks and some Bridgeville residents are worried about how the traffic detours will impact their neighborhoods. McLaughlin Run Road is a major thoroughfare between the borough and Upper St. Clair, and the construction ultimately will force motorists onto other roads.
