St. Clair Hospital’s ‘Green Team’ Cleans Up Roads

Dozens of volunteers and emergency responders hit the road earlier this month to help clean up Vanadium and Bower Hill roads.

Dozens of volunteers and emergency responders hit the road earlier this month to help clean a nearly 4-mile stretch of road from Kirwan Heights to Mt. Lebanon.

St. Clair Hospital’s “Green Team” organized the clean up on Sept. 15 with Scott Township police officers, Mt. Lebanon firefighters and Kirwan Heights medics and firefighters.

They spent the morning picking up trash and other debris on Vanadium Road in Kirwan Heights and Bower Hill Road in Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon.

Anita Puccio, who heads St. Clair’s Green Team, said they were looking for ways to give back to the community and adopting the roads seemed like a natural fit.

“We have a bunch of really enthusiastic employees who really want to make a difference,” Puccio said. “I thought, ‘Why can’t the gang really give back by giving our time and cleaning the community up?’”

The Adopt-A-Highway program through Allegheny County requires the group to pick up litter twice a year. Puccio said they plan to do it again on Nov. 17 and hope to get Chartiers Valley and Mt. Lebanon students involved.

The group had 32 volunteers who picked up 15 bags of trash and five bags of recyclables, she said.

Many local organizations, municipalities and emergency responders put on similar clean-ups during the Earth Day weekend in April. Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said it was nice to see other groups getting involved on their own.

“She put on a nice program and educated everyone,” Lewis said.
