Seminar Will Help Seniors Spot Scams

State Rep. Matt Smith is organizing an “Older & Wiser” program for seniors to protect them from scams and abuse.

The Friday event at will offer a free informational seminar to seniors, their family members and caregivers on how to avoid fraud, scams, predatory lending and identity theft.

The Neighborhood Legal Services Association is teaming up with Smith to put on the event that they hope will make people more aware of those who try to take advantage of seniors.

"I want to make sure our area seniors have this vital information to protect themselves against financial predators,” said Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon. “This program gives them the know-how to spot a scam and the tools to prevent one.”

Smith said these scams can ruin credit and put seniors, many of whom are on a fixed income, at risk. Seniors will also learn how to spot such schemes, what common methods are used by con-artists, and what actions they can take should they become victims of these types of fraud and theft.

A Scott Township police officer will also be there to answer questions and provide more information. Anyone interested in attending the session on Nov. 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. should call at 412-571-2169.

Smith hopes those in attendance will learn valuable information that can protect seniors.

"It is a safe environment where older adults can obtain important information and feel comfortable asking questions," he said.
