Scott Library Celebrates Decade of Growth

Library will have cake and light refreshments Saturday.

has been open for 10 years and is throwing a birthday celebration on Saturday to mark the occasion.

The party will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include cake and punch that follows a kids' story time in the morning.

The library opened March 26, 2001 in a grand celebration that marked nearly 40 years of planning and fundraising. Library Director Janet Forton said Saturday’s party will be more subdued, but the importance of the anniversary will be easily felt.

“It’s great, especially when you look at the services it has for members to the community,” Forton said. “You weren’t here if you’re looking at March 25, 2001. You didn’t have a local library to go to.”

Saturday marks a big occasion as the literary items and circulation numbers have grown dramatically over the past decade. She said the library has more than doubled the number of literary items to 32,600, and circulation has skyrocketed to close to 100,000.

“We’re small, but servicing the community,” Forton said. “In the past 10 years, our numbers have changed considerably. Of course, there are a lot of people in this community who don’t even know they have a library. We’re constantly trying to figure out how to get their attention.”

It has taken hard work by workers and volunteers to turn the brand new facility into a bustling literary hub, she said.

“The workers make it look so easy, but it’s very physically demanding,” Forton said. “You have to know so many things and answer so many different questions.”

The library’s members are also now requesting that residents send them copies of any history they may have about the township. There is not much of a singular collection on the township, and Forton thinks the library would be a perfect place to store historical materials.
