There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to officially open the courts and fields at the new Collier Community Park at the former Nike site.

The old fitness center and barracks on the sprawling former military base were razed last year, giving room to build soccer fields, basketball courts, a deck hockey rink, playground and other amenities.

“It’s one more step,” Collier Township Manager Sal Sirabella said. “You’re going to be surprised when you see it. It’s pretty impressive.”

State Reps. Matt Smith and Nick Kotik, along with Allegheny County Councilman Mike Finnerty will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting that begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.

This is just another phase in the construction of the community park at the former Nike Site military base. Sirabella said the ground-breaking for a new community rec center at the park is scheduled for spring and will open in March 2014.
