Local Services Mark 9/11 Anniversary

Bridgeville and Scott each will hold memorial services Sunday.

American across the country will pause this weekend , and several local communities are planning their own services to mark the 10th anniversary.

Firefighters and local leaders from six communities will gather at 1:30 p.m. Sunday behind the to reflect on the day.

Stephen Rash, trustee for the Holy Child Knights of Columbus, said they have been conducting the service for four years and are offering area residents a chance to talk about how the attacks affected them. A representative from Bridgeville, Heidelberg, Scott, Collier, South Fayette and Carnegie will speak.

“It’s one that we’re pretty proud of,” Rash said of the service. “Each year we’re trying to make it a little bigger and a little better.”

An honor guard formed by Knights of Columbus members will have firefighters, police officers and EMS workers walk through their line. There will be refreshments available inside the fire department following the service.

Meanwhile, Scott Township will have its own service at Scott Park’s amphitheater Sunday night. The 7 p.m. service will include the township fire departments along with state and county officials.

Scott Commissioner Eileen Meyers said there will be a candle light vigil and singing.

Scott Township last held a memorial service weeks after the 2001 attacks. Meyers said she is pleased to organize another service to remember the victims of 9/11.

“I’ve always wanted to do something for the 10th anniversary,” Meyers said. “It’s always been in the back of my mind.”
