Hurricane Sandy Dominates News Coverage

It should come as no surprise that this week's top news stories on Patch were about Hurricane Sandy.

It should come as no surprise that this week’s top news stories were dominated by Hurricane Sandy coverage.

And while our friends along the East Coast took the brunt of the punishment, people in the Pittsburgh area were just as interested and concerned about how the unusual superstorm would affect us here.

The top story of the week (and month, for that matter) was about most South Hills communities rescheduling Trick-or-Treating to Saturday. Only Carnegie kept it on the traditional Halloween night.

Other top stories included forecasting when Sandy would hit the Pittsburgh area and the aftermath of it passing through western Pennsylvania. Two more stories included downed trees and powerlines that closed a Bridgeville road for hours and a SWAT Team that raided a Bridgeville home looking for stolen guns.

1: Frankenstorm Postpones Trick-or-Treat for Most South Hills Neighborhoods

Frankenstorm has gobbled up Trick-or-Treat for most South Hills communities. The high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Sandy have forced nearly every town to reschedule its Trick-or-Treat to Saturday night.

3: Superstorm Sandy Blows Through Pittsburgh

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy whipped through western Pennsylvania and drenched the region, but left most area communities unscathed overnight. There were numerous reports of downed trees and powerlines, but the damage did not appear to be catastrophic or widespread.

4: Downed Trees Close Bridgeville Road

Downed trees and an unstable hillside closed Ridge Road in Bridgeville near McLaughlin Run Road for several hours Monday. The nasty weather ahead of Hurricane Sandy apparently caused at leaset one tree to fall down the hillside around 10 a.m. Monday. It ripped down at least three powerline poles in the process.

5: Stolen Guns Recovered After Police Raid Bridgeville House

Several guns stolen from a Bridgeville home in September were recovered when numerous police officers and the Allegheny County SWAT Team stormed a Union Street residence earlier this month. Bridgeville police said four guns were stolen from a home on Sept. 20, prompting a search for the weapons.
