Driver Safety Class Tailored to Seniors

AARP is offering the driver's safety refresher course at Scott Township Library.

For many senior citizens, giving up a driver’s license means losing one’s independence.

So a driver safety class organized by the AARP is helping people 50 and older learn new rules of the road and, if needed, when to realize it’s time to give up the keys.

“I’ve learned a lot from it,” said Dave Bertenthal, who lives in Scott and is a certified AARP safety instructor. “I became a better driver, so that’s why I became an instructor. It’s taught me to be more aware about things on the road."

Bertenthal said it’s important to have a refresher course as new laws are passed and vehicle technology changes.

One of the program’s discussions is also about when someone should decide to give up their license.

“I think it is a thinking point to decide maybe it’s time I give up driving, or change my driving habits,” he said.

The two-day session will be Nov. 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at . People who want to register for the class should contact the library at 412-429-5380. It is free for military veterans, $12 for AARP members and $14 for everyone else.

“We teach you techniques to help you,” he said. “It’s good for anybody, but we gear ours toward 50 and above.”
