Cooling Shelters Being Opened During Heat Wave

Heidelberg and Carnegie announced they will open cooling centers.

T is prompting a few local communities to open cooling shelters today and tomorrow.

will be used as a cooling station with the air conditioning cranking and bottle water available. The fire department will be open for people from noon until 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

"We urge anyone wishing to get out of the weather to frequent the facility and please check in on your neighbors and elderly," borough Manager Joe Kauer said.

Meanwhile, Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said residents living near his fire department may also go to Heidelberg if they need relief from the heat. He said they plan to send an EMS crew to help anyone who is suffering from the warm temperatures.

“Anyone from the Kirwan Heights area is welcome to go down there,” Lewis said. “Our EMS crew will keep an eye them and help out with any medical attention if needed.”

Meanwhile, Carnegie announced this morning it will open its borough building as a cooling station until 6 p.m.

High humidity and temperatures that are supposed to hover around the 90s for the rest of the week .
