Community Joins in Library Celebration

Cake and special activities mark the 10th anniversary of Scott Township Library.

If you didn’t know that the Scott Library was having its 10th anniversary celebration on Saturday, the balloons and pink flamingos on the corner of Greentree and Lindsay roads would have been a dead giveaway.

It was just as festive inside with balloons, signs and special activities throughout the day. The morning kicked off with a story time at 10 a.m., and by the time the children emerged from the reading, the hallway had been transformed into a celebration center.

Of course, no birthday celebration would be complete without a cake, which was decorated with the library’s mascot, Scottie. The black Scottish terrier dog was brought on for the 5th anniversary in 2006 and has been the symbol of the library ever since.

A kid’s craft station had all the materials to make “Scottie” with magnet pieces, glue, and decorations.

“We come to the library all the time for stories, crafts and activities,” said Kathy Habovick, whose granddaughters, Josie and Kayla Coptis, both of Scott, were enjoying the crafts and snacks.

In addition to the celebration activities, the library hosted a teacher sale offering pre-owned educational items for primary grades. Elaine Probicko, who retired after teaching at Keystone Oaks for 35 years, donated the materials.

“I live in Scott Township and was previously on the board of the library,” she said. “I wanted the sale to benefit the Friends of the Scott Township Public Library.”

After 10 years, the library has a lot to celebrate, including new and safer book carts donated last year.

“We desperately needed carts and people responded,” library Director Janet Forton said.

In the future, Scott Library has a lot planned for children and adults. A popular event is the Conversation Salon the second Monday of every month where the groups pick a timely topic for discussion. April’s focus is the development of the Marcellus shale gas field.

There’s also Book Bingo, a monthly book group, preschool and toddler story times as well as a Scott history quiz in connection with the township’s 150th anniversary this year.

In 2011, the library hopes to expand their offerings and services through grants from organizations, residents, and companies. Again, the Scott Township Commissioners have offered to match up to $5000 of unrestricted donations raised from other sources.
