Collier Public Works Shines With Solar Panels

The township will "Flip the Switch" on Sept. 25.

Collier Township is both a little brighter and a little greener with the addition of solar panels on the roof of the Public Works building.

The township will celebrate the addition of the solar panels with a "Flip the Switch" ceremony at the Public Works building on Hilltop Road on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m.

The solar panel system, which was designed and installed by the Pittsburgh-based solar developer, Scalo Solar Solutions, consists of 110 modules that capture the energy from the sun and generate electricity to be used by the facility.

The electricity produced by the system will significantly reduce utility costs for Collier while decreasing the township's carbon footprint, according to a release from Scalo.

The 22 kW photovoltaic system is estimated to generate a net-savings of approximately $75,000 for Collier Township. It is a "grid-tied" system, which allows for excess solar energy to be sold back to the power company, eliminating the need for batteries and allowing Collier to have electricity from the grid at night or when the sun isn't shining.

Refreshments will be served following the Sept. 25 "Flip the Switch" ceremony.
