Collier Gets $150k Grant for New Park

The township has made changes to Collier Township Community Park and will raze the fitness center.

received a $150,000 grant this month to begin work on its new 72-acre community park at the former Nike Site military complex.

The commissioners originally requested $500,000, which comes from the that helps area projects.

The money will help pay to raze nine buildings and other structures in February to make room for fields and other amenities at the new Collier Township Community Park. The commissioners also decided to demolish the fitness center, , and instead build a multi-purpose gymnasium.

“I think (the fitness center) was a thought and the commissioners felt that we could do better,” township Manager Sal Sirabella said. “Let’s do better and plan for the year 2022 instead of 2012. This is a long range (plan). We need to look 25 years from now to make sure this park is still viable and that it fits all the various needs of the community.”

The first phase of the design has made other changes, including the number of baseball fields, the layout of the multi-purpose soccer fields and parking designs. Sirabella said the commissioners went to other recreation centers, including one in Pine Township, to see what would be most important to the residents.

Bob Schuler, who is president of the township’s board of commissioners, said they were pleased with the grant money that came from a competitive application process.

“(We) look forward as a community to razing these buildings to make way for the largest public improvement project in our township’s history by creating this long-planned for park.,” Schuler said.
