Carnegie to Remember Civil War Sesquicentennial Anniversary

Carnegie Library will hold a variety of Civil War-era events Saturday

Carnegie will feel more like with 19th century America on Saturday as the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall recreates events from the Civil War.

The Carnegie Carnegie’s sixth annual Civil War Living History Weekend will hold a variety of events that show off war relics, recreate the lifestyle and even demonstrate a baseball game.

Maggie Forbes, the executive director, said the real “national treasure” is the Civil War room full of war relics that had been virtually untouched for a half-century until just a few years ago.

“The Civil War room was locked up and forgotten about for 50 years,” Forbes said. “But it made it a virtual time capsule and one of the best historical archives for the Grand Army of the Republic.”

Tours of the room begin at 10 a.m. and run throughout the day. There also will be various demonstrations in the music hall and a Victorian Tea that recently sold out.

The events also stretch to Carnegie Park where the Pittsburgh Franklins will face the Frosty Sons of Thunder as they demonstrate how baseball in the 1860s was played. There also will be “skirmishes” at the park during the day to recreate certain battles.
