Mitt Romney Fumbles the Ball ... Again

In the hours following the dastardly Libyan attack which killed U.S.
Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, Republican
presidential candidate Mitt Romney demonstrated his lack of
intelligence and savvy through launching an embarrassing broadside
against President Obama, whom he alleges used the aftermath of the
slaughter to apologize to our enemies and to curry favor with
terrorists.

Even if Romney's charges were true, which they are not, for him to use
this hour of national shock, outrage, pain, and mourning to score
cheap political points was beneath contempt. Were any intellectuals,
any informed and even-handed voters convinced that Romney acted
honorably and appropriately, that his remarks were those of a
statesman? It is instructive to note that even members of Romney's
party declined to endorse his comments and distanced themselves from them.

I would like to be able to vote for a competent, honorable Republican
for president, an individual who is able to think on his or her feet,
and who is able to grasp the gravity of their words before they exit
the candidate's mouth. Mitt Romney is not that person.

Whether it is attacking the president in a moment of international
crisis, reigniting the "birther" issue through an unfunny "joke,"
insulting the British regarding their management of the Olympics, or
being caught flat-footed when asked at a debate about releasing recent
tax returns, Governor Romney has demonstrated himself to be a bumbler, a non-serious candidate for such a critical office.

A qualified, top-notch Republican presidential candidate should be
able to win this year's election easily. This is a time of extended economic
malaise for which President Obama must bear great responsibility after
almost four years of stewardship. After all, it is he who told us that
if he is not able to bring the economy back to life within four years,
that his time in the White House should be a "one-term proposition."
Now he tells us that yes, we need to do better, and that he is the man to
get the job done, to accomplish in a second term what he was not able to do in his first. Why should the American people believe that
his failed solutions of 2009 through 2012 will suddenly bear fruit in
the years to come?

I did not and could not ever vote for a candidate like Mr. Obama, who
espouses a vast and unaffordable entitlement society, and who has no
conception of the limits of government and its provision of cradle to
grave care. Sadly, I cannot in good conscience cast a ballot for the
Republican either, given that the GOP candidate is not competent to be
the leader of the free world.

I will cast a vote of conscience for Libertarian Party candidate and
former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson. I will sleep better for it
over the next four years.

Mr. Spiegler,
I must disagree with you, and I believe that Romney's comments were true, though he may have better kept them to himself.
On the larger, more important subject of this election, I would urge you to perhaps hold your nose, and vote for Romney. Every vote will count, especially in Penna.
That said, I agree that Romney is a weak and uninspiring candidate. He is about as exciting as a loaf of stale bread, and is running a clueless, lackluster campaign, which, given the Annointed One's obvious incompetence and failures, should be ahead of Barry by 10 points. Instead,Mittens is behind, and, in my opinion destined to lose in November.
Obama has to consider himself sooooo lucky that he is facing such a weak candidate, given his own many failings, we will likely have to endure four more years of this disaster, resulting in even more damage to this country than he has already done.
I shudder to think of the Orwellian world we may face by four more years of our community organizer -in-chief!

Mr. Romney's comments were way off base in so many ways. The most obvious is the faulty timing of what he says occurred. He said the embassy released the statement condemning the video as a way of aplogizing after the attacks, when the statement was actually made before the attacks. Condemning this disgusting video as a way to try to alleviate the growing threat of violence was an attempt at possibly preventing the violence that occurred. It obviously didn't work, but it was not an act of cowardice or apology after the fact like Romney claimed.

For those who support Romney's comments, do you also approve of the video in question? Should our government have come out in favor of the video or just ignored it? See - Romney has no ideas on anything. He did not say how the government should have handled the situation, just that Obama was weak. Talking tough without ideas or strategy to back it up is schoolyard politics and is what Romney, with the support of the Republican party, is basing his entire campaign on.

We already know Romney for what he is, not to mention his lying side-kick both of whom want to drag this country back into the kind of republican mess the Bushies caused and that we are still paying for. His comment indicates clearly he would be better elected as dogcatcher, were it not for his well-documented treatment of his own dog. Thank goodness for Mr. Obama. What we really need is a house and senate that are strongly democratic so we can get this country turned around and back on its feet without people like Bawling Bohner and the house republicans who stand in the way of any positive approach to help ALL of us and not just their obscenely rich friends and bribers.

Excellent commentary. I don't agree with everything, but it's very well written and well-thought-out. Regardless of whether Romney was wrong or right in his opinion -- I'll leave that to foreign policy experts and hawks and doves (and Patch posters) to argue -- he spoke too soon. His facts were wrong and our political system has a tradition of not criticizing the American government in the midst of a crises. Especially one in which American lives are still at stake.

Your comment that "our political system has a tradition of not criticizing the American government in the midst of a crisis" is historically inaccurate.
For example, Lincoln faced serious criticism and oppostion from the Democrats and so -called 'Copperheads during the Civil War, FDR faced opposition from Republicans and others during the 1930's depression, and from isolationist Republicans and Democrats prior to Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The Vietnam War saw Johnson facing intense criticism from Republicans and liberal
Democrats, and Nixon of course, was constantly excoriated by his political opponents, and the mass media.
Our current president's Middle East "policy" appears to be going up in smoke. literally, today.

This column is a crock. What about all the sniping at President Bush by Reid, Pelosi, Sen. Obama, Sen. Clinton, etc. during Afghanistan and Iraq? Romney is stating a truth. Obama's foreign policy is a joke. Support the Arab Spring, get rid of despots, yet have no idea who will fill the vacuum. Now we know. Radical Islamists, surprise, surprise. Maybe Obama needs to come off the campaign trail, attend a few advisor meetings, and deal with the problems in the Middle East. What kind of guy is this who is partying while our state department people are killed and those still in-country remain in danger? What a inept president.

Who wrote this story? An Obama Spokesman? Since when did North Hills Patch become MSNBC. Everyone knows a vote for Libertarian Party is a vote for Obama. And what about the title attacking Romney? Obama fumbles the economy and foreign policy and he gets a free pass. This is in lock step with the main street media going after Romney to take the attention off of Obama. Obama has done far worse and he gets a blurb in the middle but you try to damage Romney with the main brunt of the story. The main street media helped elect Obama in 2008 and are doing every thing in their power to bring down Romney and put Obama back in. Keep trying. We are on to you.

You people commenting are foolish at best. The only wasted vote is the vote that goes against your conscience. This man feels, like many of us, that the two party system is a failure and it is time for some fresh ideas. Trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. But feel free to convince yourselves that Romney will be any better for this country than Obama.

Seems pretty simple to me. Romney puts his foot in his mouth quite often and it's tough to understand why one would vote for a person with both ambiguous and disingenuous policies. Obama is certainly not perfect- this seems to be a common criticism- however, I have witnessed many positive changes during his time in office.

And what's up today with people feeling the need to criticize PATCH?? If you don't like the site, don't use it. Also seems simple. But don't ruin it for the rest of us with unnecessary criticism and mean spirited commentary. PATCH is a forum for those who want to know more, about our community and our world. Isn`t it curious how the 2 guys who royally screwed up this country and economy are all but invisible during this campaign? I have no problem with anyones criticisms of Obama but what I do have a problem with is the total lack of attaching the majority of our ills to the people who own much of it(Bush,Cheyney, their advisors and the current Republicans in congress). If you`re going to play the blame game then be sure to get all the players right!! Also, who is to blame for the Republican party having such a weak, flawed, unpopular and uninspiring group of candidates? Their failure to provide an attractive alternative to Obama will be their downfall in this election and they will have only themselves, for cowing down to the extremists in their party, to blame for the loss.

Lynn Knapp - you need to get your facts straight as once again a democrat only post half truths. This is what was said "In an interview that aired Friday morning, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney told "Good Morning America" that the definition of middle income in America is "$200,000 to $250,000 or less." you forgot to put in the LESS part.

Back when Bush was President the median household income was $54,489. Now with obama as president the median household income is at $50,054. Give obama another 4 years in office and the median household income will be down around $40,000. We need to go forward not backwards as obama is taking us.

The Patch is obviously a liberal controlled blog. Look at the "opinions" that are posted. They are so far left radical. Then when you click on an article to read on the post, the page is covered top, side and bottom with obama ads. It really would be humorous if it wasn't so sad how uninformed these people are about what obama has done to this country and his all out plan to finish it and completely bring this country down. All you have to do is watch a 90 minute documentary in the theaters now, called 2016 obamas America, to see his background and what his beliefs are. Then it will all be clear what he has already done to our great nation and his goal. It is evil and I pray everyone who is uneducated about this person will at least try to find out what this man is about, since you obviously knew nothing about him when you voted for him. On top of his radical beliefs, he has destroyed our great nation! We are further in debt, 16 TRILLION, he is making us defenseless against the world, our credit rating has dropped again since he took office to AA-, unemployment has gone up and stayed the whole time he has been in office, Social Security and Medicaire are broke because of obamacare and it will only be worse.

Janet, our Patch sites are staffed by trained journalists who strive for unbiased, fair and accurate reporting. In contrast, we offer a "Local Voices" section, where this piece is found, where anyone in the community can "blog." A blog, as defined by Mirriam-Webster Dictionary, is an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer. We welcome bloggers from both sides of the political spectrum—and anywhere in between. Our bloggers are unpaid and share their opinions, interests and ideas on a variety of topics, many of which have nothing to do with politics. In fact, we welcome anyone who wants to blog from a different viewpoint to do so because it gives our readers a chance to see a variety of opinions.

While we respect your perspective, the choices of material that is not local leaves much room for flexibility and subjective interjection. Also, how the material is presented makes Patch open to evaluation. We also realize the internal viewpoint is different, and much closer than those of us reading the words.

There is little question about a strategy of the region management over the past couple of months. Undoubtedly, the strategy is molded through early November. That is certainly Patch's prerogative. The sandbox belongs to Patch, and nobody disputes this basic fact.

It is also clear that Patch is in desperate need of site traffic. In the recent revelation that each site is costing about twice the income stream, getting more advertising revenue is a must. If there is not a change, Patch will be part of history. This is not an altruistic venture. The recent hire of an Advertising Manager is a mark of traveling a different, more productive path.

Some of the recent Patch offerings, and the decision to tie certain stories across many sites may help site traffic, I don't know. You know the stats, we do not. However, while the traffic may be higher, the real question is in regard of unique traffic. That may not change much with all these political stories. The same people are just migrating from story to story, not appealing to any new audience.

Part 1:
I really cannot understand the degree by which these opinions differ. Nowhere is the causation of the events that transpired these beliefs. No one here has mentioned that the video on you tube brought so much anger among the Muslim world. It is our democracy where free speech is guaranteed that events like this can happen in other parts of the world. Gov. Romney did in fact made these tragic events a political pond in which he moved it prior to the time of the next of kin was notified. To go on the offensive without knowing the facts or events is the true indication of the inability to lead. One who desires the office of President cannot be acting as an enforcer in the sport of hockey. Like in the world of science where every motion has an equal and opposite reaction, the President’s actions have consequences.

Part 2
A patriot does what is best for his country where in this instance, Gov. Romney did what he thought was best for his chance at the office of the presidency. He was totally wrong.
It is my opinion that this action displayed a total lack of maturity (even at his advanced age) and respect to our people who gave up their lives for our country. Instead of condemning the offenders, he attacks the president. Gov. Romney had a chance to appear presidential and he failed. It is so apparent that he is "not ready for prime time". While I am at it, he really does not understand the new social media, as he will say whatever his audience desires. That was the old way of campaigning in that you would promise anything to anyone as the people in this area would not know what people in another area hear from the candidate. No so today as every speech is online seconds after it is given.

Bob, I agree with much of what you say in both posts. However, it is also clear that Mr. Obama is not ready for prime time either. The response in the past couple of days to the Middle Eastern developments has been very troubling. Even to hear the White House say the uprisings "are not against America" is very disturbing.

Mr. Romney had this election in his hands to loose, and he is doing a good job of just that. His statements were out of place and irresponsible.

As the days wind down to November, it is getting clearer that our country is sorely lacking leadership, and there is nothing on the horizon. The GOP should have been able to run the dog catcher, forgetting about all the time and effort of the primary campaigns. The dog catcher should have won the race going away. But, all the events in the political arena over the past year have been distressing. This includes the campaign trail, and the happenings (or lack thereof) in Washington DC.

We have a major debt crisis on our hands. We have a major tax change coming on January 1. We have significant matters pertaining to entitlement programs. Now, we recently have the Federal Reserve injecting fiscal control into a major fiscal policy matter (QE3). How many days has Congress met in the past two months? Where are they now? How many times will they meet before the year end? Where is the leadership on any front to get things moving?

To Roger:
Really don't see your point given the current President is President. By definition, he cannot look like anything other that what he is, the President. Really can’t find the statement about which you refer but these attacks upon our embassy in Benghazi was an opportunistic commando raid that was in the planning stages for reprisal of the drone attack that took out the #2 guy in Al Qaeda, Abu Yahya Al-Libi. These terrorists used these demonstrations as a cover for their planned attack. I would assume the rest of these demonstrations (protests) are for the video that was on display on various TV stations in the world. It is a protest against the video from USA where free speech is a right.

As for the tax/budget problem that you refer, it is up to both the congress via fiscal policy and the Fed via monetary policy to correct, in fact the Fed is mandated in their charter to curb inflation and unemployment. Congress has had no cooperation between the parties the last three and a half years by design hence no fiscal action has been taken. Not until those elected officials learn to govern; instead of committing their self-serving actions to break down our government, will these problems be addressed.

Bob Zanakis

3:38 pm on Saturday, September 15, 2012

Let me also address the Congress meeting problem. Since the election of 2010, the US House has changed many rules and procedures since they took power in 2011. One most drastic change is that they will not convene until Tuesdays and adjourn at the end of the day on Thursday giving the members of the house Mondays and Fridays to travel back to their home districts. This is the way the House does business now. They just returned from a 5-week vacation with all the unfinished business they left behind. Look at the Bills the House has passed since January 2011. I have never seen so many restricted bills using the government power to dictate what used to be a woman's rights to her body. The party in power says they are for small government UNLESS it is in their furthering their morals upon the people. It is just a shame that they won control of the House on the basis of promising jobs, jobs and jobs and done nothing to create a single job other than indirectly increasing the travel agents booking the members’ flights to and out of DC.
