Robert Kearney is pleased with the financial shape of the Chartiers Valley School District, but believes that it’s time to set the bar higher on academics by giving students more resources.

“Our education is going well, but we can do better,” Kearney said. “I think this is a challenging time and with perseverance we can do it. I think it’s a good school district, but there are times when I think the bar can be held higher.”

Kearney said he would like to see the school library open longer after hours for students to study, and thinks there should be some type of outreach program for parents if they want to help their kids with homework.

He said each board meeting should also be televised so those who can’t attend can watch later and remain informed about what is happening in the district.

“It’s finding a passion for education,” Kearney said. “I’ve never done this before, but I’ve been going to meetings for several years. It’s not a paid position, but it’s something I want to do for my kids and the students in the school district.”

Kearney, who is known by many as Bob, is 52 and has lived in Scott Township for the past 10 years. He is a respiratory therapist by trade and worked at Shadyside Hospital for 20 years. Kearney has three kids in the school district.

He said he would bring a positive attitude to the job and work to build a consensus with other members on the board. Kearney said he’s eager to listen to what people in the community have to say and wants to make him accessible to parents and students.

“I’m an outgoing person and will give you a chance to engage me,” Kearney said. “If I’m lucky enough to make it on the school board, I will go out of my way to listen to someone’s concerns.”
