Tractor-trailer Crushes Car in Collier

Driver suffered minor injuries after rig makes wide turn into Great Southern

A tractor-trailer making a wide right turn from Route 50 into crushed the side of a passing car, causing minor injuries to the driver Saturday morning.

The woman, whom police did not identify, was driving in the right lane of Route 50 at about 11:20 a.m. when the tractor-trailer attempted to pull into the shopping center from the left lane, Collier Township police said. The car became wedged beneath the rig and was dragged several feet.

Police said the middle-aged woman suffered minor injuries and was being evaluated by paramedics at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured and was able to drive his rig away from the scene after police finished their investigation.

Investigators said the driver of the rig took the wrong exit from Interstate 79 and was attempting to turn around in the shopping center. Police said they found nothing wrong with the rig during the initial investigation, but information and photos of the crash will be forwarded to the township’s truck inspector for further investigation.

Police blocked two lanes on Route 50 while the car was pulled from the beneath the truck. Investigators expected to release more information on the crash on Monday.

Collier Township police were assisted at the scene by officers from Bridgeville and members of the Kirwan Heights Volunteer Fire Department.
