A tanker that spilled oil at the end Bower Hill Road in Bridgeville closed the roadway for nearly two hours and caused a traffic nightmare right before the evening rush hour.

Authorities were dispatched to the oil spill around 2:25 p.m. Friday between McLaughin Run Road and Union Street.

Initial reports indicated a crash in the area caused the oil to leak for the tanker.

Police immediately diverted traffic onto parallel running Baldwin Street and firefighters began spreading material on the road to soak up the oil. A long line of cars could be seen on Baldwin and nearby Railroad Street as motorists snaked around the detour.

A hazardous material crew has been called to the scene to assist in the clean up. Firefighters were seen brooming up the material while the tanker was being towed away.

They were able to reopen the roadway to traffic by 4:30 p.m. and get traffic moving before rush hour began.
