The $2.2 million Tri-Community Streetscape project that stretches from Heidelberg through Scott Township and into Carnegie is hitting the homestretch.

The three municipalities are getting closer to making last-minute adjustments before approving the final plans to begin work.

“Things are finally taking shape,” Heidelberg borough Manager Joe Kauer said. “We’re moving into final decisions.”

The borough now has the most recent engineering designs of the project along Route 50 between Second and Fourth streets. They’re hoping for final decisions later this month on the number of lampposts and their locations for the streetscape project.

“They’re in final design mode,” Kauer told the borough council during its Tuesday night workshop meeting. “They’re not the final plans.”

But once those plans are ultimately approved by the council, they’re pretty much stuck with them.

“Give some final tweaks or forever hold your peace,” Kauer said.

Some of those tweaks include on-street parking “bump outs” that give motorists more of a barrier to park their cars.

Mayor Ken LaSota and some members said they are concerned about the positioning of some of the bump-outs, and whether any are needed. LaSota said he is especially concerned that they may cost more than expected and throw the project into further delay.

“It’s been a nine-and-a-half year odyssey,” LaSota said.

Meanwhile, Scott Township commissioners are moving forward with their plans to revitalize Carothers Avenue, which has to be synchronized with the other two municipalities.

“We just got approval for the final design, so we are moving forward,” township Manager Denise Fitzgerald said.
