A snowstorm that blew through the Pittsburgh area Friday caused numerous car accidents and backed up traffic on major highways and local roads.

The snow began falling in the Bridgeville area shortly after 9 a.m. and quickly covered most roads. Road conditions around the South Hills of Pittsburgh quickly deteriorated as snow blanketed western Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service recorded 4.2 inches of snow in the Bridgeville area.

CV officials announced that all evening activities would be canceled Friday night. Also, the high school dismissed students a little bit earlier than usual to help the other school buses run on time.

Police briefly shut down Hilltop Road in Collier Township near Nike Site after a car accident around 11:45 a.m. No injuries were reported in that crash, however, emergency dispatchers said there were injuries in a crash at Bower Hill and Vanadium roads in Scott Township around 1:30 p.m.

A multi-vehicle accident was also reported on Interstate 79 near the southbound Canonsburg exit around 10 a.m. The crash was cleared shortly after 11 a.m., but traffic in both directions was moving slowly on I-79 near the Bridgeville exit for most of the day.

Roads in the Bridgeville area are pretty nasty right now. Looks like we're close to an inch as of 10:50 a.m. Friday. What's the weather like in your neighborhood?

Sounds like Carlynton is doing early dismissals. Still waiting to hear from CV officials about a decision.

That sounds about right, Karen... CV officials just announced that all evening activities are canceled for tonight. Also, the high school buses will leave a little bit earlier to help the other schools run on time.

Does anyone know how the roads are in Bridgeville, Collier and Heidelberg? The roads are still pretty bad in South Fayette. We had about 3+ inches of snow as of 1:30 p.m.

You'd think the roads would be better as we had days of preparation with this storm! Bower Hill Road is slick and messy from Kelso all the way down to Painters Run. Between the traffic, the hills, and stop lights it is not a risk worth taking--find an alternate route.

Washington Pike in South Fayette is clear, although drivers are still being cautious. A Twitter follower told me Birdland is plowed and salted. How are the roads in your neighborhood?
