The biting rain that fell Wednesday morning turned into a wintry mix, although the amount of snow accumulation depended on which side of the city you’re located.

Dan Krzywiecki, the chief meteorologist for Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said the rain would gradually change over into a snowy mix before turning to all snow around Wednesday night's rush hour. However, with warmer than usual temperatures this week, he expected the only accumulation to be in grassy areas.

“The ground temps are well above freezing, but as the air temperatures cool and approach freezing–that will be some time later this evening–there could be some slippery spots,” he said. “Plus any water on the roads after the event could turn to ice.”

He expected southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County to receive an inch of snow and “two inches is possible” on grassy areas. North of the city near Butler County should receive no more than an inch of accumulation, he said.

Krzywiecki said the real snow totals will be piling up in Greene County and southern Washington County. The counties in the Laurel Highlands to the east are expected to have the largest accumulations, which he anticipated could be four to eight inches.

Air Science Consultants is a private meteorology company on Prestley Road with a wide range of clients who hire them for a variety of jobs. Last year, they helped the National Hockey League when warmer temperatures and rain threatened to cancel the Winter Classic at Heinz Field.
