Post-Conventions: Who Will Win the 2012 Presidential Election?
Now that the Democratic and Republican delegates have officially chosen their nominees, Patch wants to know: Who are you betting on?
It's official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin.
A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: Gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign.
The latest Gallup Polls show registered voters preferring Obama to Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think Obama is more likeable, but trust Romney more to handle the economy.
Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the major-party candidates on various factors: incumbent advantage, fundraising clout, even religion.
Patch wants to know: Regardless of who you support for president, who do you think will actually claim victory in November?
Vote in our poll below, and let us know your reasoning in the comments.

I see it being a repeat of the Clinton years. Two terms weather we like it or not.

The Conventions have little to do with the outcome of the elections. Perhaps the most value of recent Conventions is to find emerging leaders. Conventions in recent years are merely formalities, with nothing decided. Conventions used to be a democratic process of voting (often many rounds of voting) to find a nominee. But, this process is all gone now.
There are six possibilities:
1. Obama wins, House goes (D), and Senate remains (D)
2. Obama wins, House remains (R), and Senate remains (D)
3. Obama wins, House remains (R), and Senate goes (R)
4. Romney wins, House goes (D), and Senate remains (D)
5. Romney wins, House remains (R), and Senate remains (D)
6. Romney wins, House remains (R), and Senate goes (R)
If #1, the pattern will return as 2008, 2009, with even more vengeance for spending, entitlements, regulation and taxation. The all (D) situation now realizes they should have pushed through more of their agenda when they had the chance two years ago, so will work even harder to advance the (D) causes.
If #2, the same gridlock as the past two years. The Senate will not pass a budget, and nothing much will be accomplished. The economy will grow through natural changes in capitalism, not because of Congressional action.
If #3, major conflicts will arise, but something will be accomplished. Obama's hands will be held as the culprit for lack of change. Both chambers will force issues.
Roger
6:49 am on Friday, September 7, 2012
If #4, major conflict as in #3. Romney will accomplish little of his agenda.
If #5, gridlock like we've had the past two years, but some progress. With a different leader in the WH, some new things will get done, but not on the scale Romney would like.
If #6, many changes will happen. The "I like to fire people" plan will come together, and the 12,000 new hires for the Feds will cease, and many explosions in Fed employment of the past years will be burst with a debris field. There will be lots of other changes in regulations and taxation policy.
My expectation is #2 will be the outcome. Gridlock, but the economy will move because of the inherent cycles. Obama will take credit, spending will increase, taxes will rise, and businesses will continue to sit on the uncertainty and stifling effects of the Feds. I am prepared for a couple more years of stagnation.

Romney keeps promoting himself as a businessman who knows how to create jobs. In actuality, he has never been the CEO of a company that manufacturers products with responsibility for the entire supply chain from introduction of a product to market. He has promised to create so many jobs that we will probably need to bring in labor from Mexico to fill them. This, from he great outsourcer. So far, he has not given even a slight hint on how he plans to do it. He has distorted his record and changed positions so often, he is like a weathervane in a New England hurricane. His selection of Ryan, a profuse liar, is really scary.

Alex, I guess it was all of the then-Senator Obama's experience in private enterprise that qualified him for election in 2008. It was his experience in creating a product vision, developing products, gathering resources and technology for manufacturing, developing sales and marketing strategy, and creating distribution channels. Am I right?

Susan Rose
8:02 am on Friday, September 7, 2012
Why? because the very liberals were not voting due to too much compromising by Obama. He was not liberal enough. Now that so many have endorsed him and said why, the decision is easier to make. ( Including Caroline Kennedy,Michael Moore etc who were previously not happy with Obama.) But do you want the land of the 1% and the home of the slaves? No! I think more disappointed liberals will be energized to get to the polls now
Jess M.
2:28 pm on Friday, September 7, 2012
Why do people out there decide who they will vote for by what some pseudo celebrity thinks or says who they like? God, I don't need my Ambien when Caroline Kennedy starts to talk. And Michael More? What a hypocrite. He hates capitalism but he was able to make millions because of capitalism. People ..... do your own research, read, ask questions. Whether you vote for Obama or Governor Romney .. do not do it because someone like Eva Longoria tells you to do so ... think for yourself.
Roger
9:46 pm on Friday, September 7, 2012
Susan, your reply is very confusing. Endorsements mean nothing, so that part can be discarded.
The part about the 1% is important. Your statement is in the form of a question, perhaps rhetorical. But, it implies that you dislike the notion of the wealthier getting more wealth. No, you don't say that, but the words seem to convey this is what you are meaning.
If this to be the case, then you are contradicting yourself. Under the Obama policies, the people of wealth have become wealthier. Why? Because they do not wish to invest their money into the capital markets, so have hung on to cash. Would you want to invest into the capital markets now? Uncertainty and lack of direction from the Feds have left these folks with little choice but to hang to their cash.
So, if you want more of Obama, and yet dislike those of means to gain more wealth, then you need to provide a reconciliation of those positions. As stated, they are contradictory.
You may have an explanation, so let's hear it, please. Thanks.

Can not and will not support anyone who asks for my trust - but won't show me their tax returns. Having over 25 years experience in the financial services and tax industry myself, transparency and disclosure should be the norm, no excuses or exceptions. Couple that with his refusal to give any details (the how) of any specific plans to accomplish his goals, his history of changing positions on issues, no support of a woman's right to choose, and his complete inability to connect to/understand the middle class - sorry, I will not vote my party line until they present a decent candidate. (Did they not learn after picking an idiot like Palin?) I am sickened by the fact that both sides (albeit more on the Republican side) think it's more important to block the other sides agenda then to work together to find a compromise and move this country forward. We need a viable 3rd party in this country to force elected officials to work together, or better yet - abolish parties all together. Two party systems do not work unless both sides are willing to compromise and come up with joint solutions. When one side's primary objective is to keep the other side from being re-elected rather than working to find solutions to move our country forward, that is sad. I am becoming more and more disgusted at the arrogant attitude. Once upon a time, once elected, people had respect for the office - not anymore. It's pathetic. I honestly don't think this is what our founding forefathers had in mind.

I can say that, Me, because Obamacare has already helped me. And not by taking anyone's taxes, by regulating the health care industry. Yes, I would agree, people over 70 would not need any sort of health insurance buy-in program via Obamacare because they would be on medicare/medicaid and covered. Obamacare has nothing to do with SS or what is in place for the elderly. No, a panel will not decide treatment, you can't believe anything fox news pumps out there. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says President Obama's plan to overhaul health care is evil. "Downright evil." She used Facebook to reveal her thoughts on the debate. The former Republican vice presidential candidate made her her first online comments since leaving office, and according to a report by the Associated Press she said in the "Facebook posting that he would create a "death panel" that would deny care to the neediest Americans."

Obama Care - Sarah Palin Calls Health Plan 'Evil' (Image: WENN)
"And who will suffer the most when they ration care?" Palin asks in her online argument against the policy. "The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obamas 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."

Never in the history of voting have we ever elected someone that all people can agree on and never in this life will it ever happen....Given the lesser of the two evils I hope to see Obama win again. I think as a given nobody can enter the position of president, inherit all of the problems, the deficit, the screwed up budget, the opposing sides, the disgruntled people and the mess the country is in expecting that in a mere four years that he or she can undo all of the damage. Just the learning process and putting your ducks in order takes much time and work. I think that Obama has a good handle on things and I think that he truly wants to see success in this country. This is his country also. This is the place where his babies are being raised. Where his wife is living out her life...Where everything that happens in this country has a trickle down effect on everyone. Nobody is immune from it. Not even his loved ones. With that in mind I support one more term for this man.

Clearly, you did not live the recent history of the transition from the Carter Administration to the Regan Administration. Consider inflation rates, interest rates, unemployment rates, as a start point. Then look at the same information when Regan was asked to be returned for four years.
I think you took in the statement of Pres Clinton, hook, line and sinker. I consider Bill Clinton to be very good leader, but I had to wonder what he was thinking with his statement that you echo here. Yes, it made for great conventions rhetoric, but was just plain wrong.
When comparing Obama to Clinton with regard to leadership, there is no match. Clinton was the master at triangulation, something people chuckled about at the time. But, he was successful in getting things moving, unlike the current Administration.
Nice try Marsha, but you either didn't live through the era, or haven't read the history books. Time to regroup and develop your position on another platform.

I am not following the people who said they would not vote for Obama because there are "no jobs" and "he is destructive" and "no results." I would agree with you if you were all 3.5 years old, then it would make sense that these ideas are all you know.
Where were you when Bush was in office, where people lost jobs every day, he deregulated the stock market causing a huge crash, then bailed out his buddies on wall street and sent the debt soaring with unnecessary wars? Where were you then? Not born yet??
I like how "no jobs" actually means, not enough jobs being added. I see help wanted all over the place, there are gains in jobs every month, but yet, there are "no jobs." I think you mean "no jobs" where I can sit on your butt and do nothing in a cube farm and collect free health insurance, vacation time and have no responsibility. Yes, those jobs are gone, for good. The jobs that are out there are ones that benefit others and make you work, and guess what? You may have to buy into your own health insurance and maybe not get a company car!
And the God thing. Really? Would you say that to someone who is saving your life or giving you a job? No thanks, you don't say I love God enough. Nazy says: "... Where were you when Bush was in office, where people lost jobs every day, he deregulated the stock market causing a huge crash ...."
Sorry, Nazy, ... Glass-Steagall was repealed in 1999, when Clinton was in office. This was the demise, not regulations during the 2000s being relaxed. Nothing in Dodd-Frank covers the transactions of 2008 leading to the demise of the large banks. D-F provided the opportunity to cover the matters, but did not.
Nice try about "God" and the RNC, but it does not work. Choosing to ignore the obvious reference shows you either do not understand the basic Bible lesson,or want to mislead by intent. Nobody has a corner on that market, either (D) or (R), but (D) certainly brought the principle to the surface with their platform discussion.

OK, that means you believe in natural revelation. Natural revelation is a great thing, but says nothing to the issue of eternal destiny. Remember the Bible says, "... even the demons believe in God ...."
The Bible is God's message to man, His message of salvation and redemption of mankind. To "love God," yet reject His plan for mankind is a contradiction. To "love God," your first desire would be to be obedient to His commands and His ways. Your statements make zero sense.
Failure to read the Bible and yet "love God" are two ideas that don't fit, for anybody.

There was an interesting story about why the "job creators" aka 1 percenters, have not been investing their stored millions to create jobs. They won't invest in companies because there isn't a customer base aka "the middle class" to buy the products they make! The solution? Pay workers more out of extra profits (not all profits) and they will have the extra money to buy what we are making or services we are selling. And the positive cycle begins. If you don't have a middle class to spend money on the very things we create, the money doesn't get invested and the rich keep their money in banks, as it has been happening since the Bush years. The vicious cycle will continue, hurting everyone unless the government hand is forced to raise minimum wage, for instance to get more money in the hands of the spenders. This BS about how the rich need more money to "create" jobs is silly. They have had that extra money for years, but yet you complain Obama isn't creating the jobs? How does that logic work??
Roger

Nazy, again another nice try, but no cigar on this one either. You have either been out of the country, or living under a rock to believe the lack of investment. Perhaps you need to begin reading the financial section of the newspapers, watching the business channels on TV, or listening to business-related radio programs.
I think that your statements put you in the group that believes businesses exist for the purpose of giving people employment.
Why would anybody making money in business or in the financial markets invest in new business, or expansion at this time? Would you? [Same question has been asked repeatedly in these threads, and never gets an affirmative answer -- "OK, for others to invest, putting their money at risk, but not OK for me."]
Do you know the unemployment rate and the values of the financial markets in 2007?
Nazy H
3:06 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2012
I posted the story below, Roger, and I didn't find it under a rock. Maybe your rock is so dark and cozy you think everyone else lives there too! We don't.
No, I own a business, my main goal with working is making money. I do that by helping businesses succeed and when they do better, wait for it, I get more MONEY! Hand in hand, not one or the other.
Investing in new business and expansion is how we create more jobs and grow our economy, the entire discussion on this article. All the republicans point to joblessness but now you say, Roger, why would anyone expand and add jobs? Which way do you want it? Expand and add jobs or not expand and get the jobless rate down?
Why would I want or care to know that in 2007? Those were false numbers, since to get those numbers, we had to risk everything, and SPOILER ALERT - we lost it.

Roger-what will Romney's tax return will tell me? 1) his willingness to play by the same rules as everyone else-the reputation he is fighting is his arrogance and 'I'm better than you' attitude is exemplified in this, 2) I would like to see if he pushes the envelope and operates in the gray area using questionable tax practices-speaks to his character, and 3) shows where he is investing-his 'trickle down' theory of 'cut the taxes for the rich and they will invest' doesn't hold much water if he is not investing in our country, does it? 4) I think it's important to see if, with all the money he has made from the opportunities this country has afforded him, he has paid his fair share of taxes - has he paid any? (or have they all been negated by taking advantage of highly questionable tax schemes). There are legitimate deductions to reduce your taxes and then there are questionable ones that would be severely scrutinized in the event of an audit, many of which would not hold water and would be denied under review.
Reed-I never said Romney didn't have goals, everyone has goals, but he has refused to tell us HOW he plans to achieve those goals. I have a goal to retire comfortably at 60, but if I have absolutely no plan or no specific idea how to accomplish that and just tell you that's my goal- likely it won't happen. When you are asking people to vote for you to allow you to lead them- you damn well better have a specific plan to do so and be willing to share that specific plan.

Victoria, those are primarily reasons for being nosy, not gaining useful information.
How many times have politicians been caught by the IRS when they come to the front as a candidate, or as an appointee? Several people that Pres Obama appointed to Cabinet posts because immediate exposures (Tim Geithner comes to mind quickly). The pattern is that these folks become targets of deep scrutiny. Do you think that you can be better at detecting tax irregularities than the IRS? If so, please apply to the IRS for an investigator so flush out those who circumvent the tax codes. We all will thank you.
So what if he pushes the envelope? I utilize provisions of the tax code for all my tax planning. I pay people money to advise me how to manage my finances to dovetail with what the code provides. I am one of many that makes these folks an industry. A deduction is a deduction. Some who have disdain for deductions call them "loopholes" (one regular poster on this board has talked at length about closing loopholes, but is unable to define a loophole).
You, and the others who try to make an issue out of tax returns, are really stretching for a reason to dislike Romney. There are lots of reasons I do not like his plans, but not releasing tax returns is not even on the radar.
Tax returns say little about where anybody has money invested. If you think this to be false, then you know little about investing and tax codes.

Why can my husband and I each have two jobs and at one of his jobs they can't get competent people? Why do I get email lists of jobs each week with about 50 job available and I see the same ones available week after week?
It isn't easy work at his second job, but it is better than unemployment and can start off being paid more than minimum wage. I may not need to read the "paper" for unemployment rates, I live in the real world where I don't know anyone who doesn't have a job, nor do I know anyone who is looking and can't get one.

If Americans want to create jobs the first thing all needs to do is START BUYING AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS. Sure you might spend extra time in the store looking at labels to find out where products are made, but the end result will be more jobs for American Workers. Do you know most generic food is made in the United States, yet people would rather buy a name Brand Product made in Japan. Look at all the pet food that came out of Japan that killed our animals and it took like 6 months for the Government to step in and pull these products from our shelves.

Nazy H, why don't you go look at the pay rate for all of these manufacturing jobs that you are bragging about 7.25 to 8.75 an hour with no benefits. Most companies now go though employment agencies to fill these positions and until their contract is up with the employment agency they are entitled to no benefits nor does the time with the company count for anything. Most people do not want to find a job from an employment agency for this reason. It is cheaper for Manufactures to use employment agencies for this purpose and they end up keeping very few people that were hired.
Roger
2:39 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2012
Nazy, you are right about jobs open, but cannot be filled.
From the articles you posted, plus observations of mine from private discussions and other media sources:
1. The mindset of our nation is "college education gets you a good job." Well, that used to be the case, but not so much in the past few years. Far too many people think they want a "desk job," so ignore the technically, trade-related jobs. Students believe they need to be on a college campus (and their parent also, in many cases), rather than going to trade school to learn something useful, to be employed immediately. In other words, we have lost an appetite for doing skilled work, and our education system is falling short.
2. As one of the articles pointed out (2nd?), many applicants can't get through the first phase of the process. They don't fill out the application (8 pages was apparently too much), can't pass the drug test, or otherwise don't care to work at getting the jobs. I personally know of employers with stats similar to quoted: 100 applicants, 50% can't pass drug test, 25% can't get driver's license, and others who can't show up for an interview when asked. Ten (of the 100) are left, three are selected, and two don't bother to show up on the first day of work. The hiring process is expensive, so employers really need to ask themselves "is it worth is?"
Roger
2:45 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2012
3. Unemployment benefits are a discouraging part of people being interested in working. As one of the articles said, "... why should I work, when I still have X weeks left on my unemployment benefits." Personally, I know extended family members who have worked only a few months out of the last 48 months, "... easier to stay at home and collect." Shame on them! I have also know others who have no interest in even looking, until their stream of benefits is running out. Yes, they will make one meager attempt, get a sign-off that they have looked, so that the benefit stream will continue. These are able-bodies folks, but just too lazy, knowing they will get some money rolling in the door. Now that 1/8% of our population is getting food stamps, we have a mindset well established.
I have given employment leads to many of the unemployed folks over the past couple of years. My suggestions are usually discarded, because "it isn't in my field." Hogwash!!!
4. Our work ethic has been severely depleted, as a country. There is way too much to say, so will spare anybody still reading. This is no secret.

I agree with you Roger. Sometimes you post real information with real arguments that back it up, and other times you go off on your own tangent. What gives?
I hope we can agree, Jean, that the definition of a job is work that someone else pays you for. Then what I describe in facts above, are JOBS.
Are you trying to say with your post, "ok, you got me, these are jobs but we can't count them as REAL jobs until I personally deem the amount of money to be acceptable and they get free health insurance." Because that is what I am hearing. And someone who is on unemployment that wants to work would jump at the chance to start by making anything above $0. The health insurance issue will be less important now that Obamacare is going forward. So that shouldn't hold back anyone from taking a JOB. Any job if they don't have one.
So you are saying you would have 8+% unemployment for the country until "special, great" jobs can be had by all, and no one has to go through an employment agency?? Really, that is a lot of complicated restrictions, I guess that is why our country can't get anything straight.

Nazy I hope that Romney gets in office and tossed obamacare where it belongs in the garbage. Or if he does keep it makes everyone pay for their own healthcare as it should be. Why I want obama gone is not because of his color, it is because of his entitlement, that people think they should be handed their healthcare on a silver platter. I don't want to be paying for your birth control or for you to get an abortion. There are jobs out there and people don't want to work for minimum wage or close to it. Kids coming out of college want jobs making 50,000 or more a year so they can pay off student loans. It is people like you that has turned me off of obama with their entitlement.

http://www.thefoldblog.com/2011/12/no-president-added-more-debt-than-bush.html
We don't work two jobs because of Obama, it is because we have 2 disabled children and because of the amount of time away from work to deal with my children, fight our school district to follow laws, I cannot focus on my business and make our money the way we had before. And to add to it, Corbett is adding a Disability Tax to our bill.
That's right, we get to pay the Disability Tax this November! Corbett is calling it "copays" which means we will pay hundreds of dollars equal to our mortgage payment or more, each month. This is on top of the health care we already pay that is equal to our mortgage, so it is like owning 3 houses and in return getting disabled children and only 1 house to live in.
We are lucky neither of them are severely disabled, or we would get to pay 5% right off the top of your annual income, a TAX/punishment for having given birth to children who need help.
Corbett 2012: Making sure disabled children become disabled adults so they can earn disability instead of a paycheck.

Nazy why I say to put obummer on a plane back to Kenya is because I don't believe his birth certificate that he put out last year. Most don't believe it is a true birth certificate beings that he was born in a hospital that didn't exist till 2 years after he was born. It also listed on his birth certificate that he was African yet back in the 60's the were using the term Negro (no offense to anyone). Why isn't he releasing any medical and school records is because he came to school in the United States as a Foreign Exchange Student. That is why I want him shipped back to Kenya as that is where he was born and raised Even legal experts say his birth certificate is a fraud. He also wants all of his records sealed after he leaves the White House and trying to sign legislation to that fact. I hope when Romney gets in office he exposes obummer to the fraud he is. She did not state to send him back to Kenya because he was black, and do we know for a fact that all of Kenya is black, that there isn't white people living in Kenya
"The People of Kenya, Social Issues
The social structure that evolved in Kenya during colonial times emphasized race and class. The dominance of whites over blacks was reinforced through segregation of the races and, within the black African population, of the various ethnic groups. Within each ethnic group, status was determined largely by wealth. After Kenya gained independence in 1963, race ceased to be an important indicator of social status, but wealth and ethnic identity remained significant. Today, a number of Kenya’s problems result from disparities in wealth. These problems include pervasive urban and rural poverty, overcrowded and substandard housing in urban areas, and a relatively high rate of unemployment. In the 1990s the country also witnessed periodic clashes between ethnic groups, particularly between Kalenjin and Kikuyu peoples in west central Kenya.

Nazy H, we only pull comments that violate our terms of use. http://foresthills-regentsquare.patch.com/terms (The terms of use are the same on all of our sites.) We post polls like this because we believe that it is important for the community to discuss important issues of the times, especially in this world where neighbors sometimes don't even talk to each other anymore in person.

Please watch and listen all the way through whether you are democrat or republican. It will make your blood boil if you have not seen this already.

Zandy-not everyone is pulling comments. You will have to explain to me how these nasty posts made it through on this story:
http://dormont-brookline.patch.com/articles/should-we-keep-the-affordable-care-act-or-parts-of-it
I didn't take any of it personally, since I had already disregarded most of the statements being out of spite since the facts got in the way of the argument. I also bring this up because a lot of those who personally attacked me are posting on this story as well. It seems that this is how it is set up and took this type of forum to be like this, and only those who complained on this particular story got posts removed, I have not seen it anywhere else.
I did end up changing my name because they were getting creepy. So either let them run or pull them before someone complains if that is the policy. I had to flag as inappropriate on posts attacking me were removed, but meanwhile I summarize what someone else's posts say and I get pulled.
seems like some posters on the Patch know how to work the system.

Jean smith says: I don't believe his birth certificate that he put out last year. Most don't believe it is a true birth certificate>>>>
MOST? Who? Most of your ill informed friends, JEAN?
<<<<beings that he was born in a hospital that didn't exist till 2 years after he was born. It also listed on his birth certificate that he was African yet back in the 60's the were using the term Negro (no offense to anyone).>>>>
Did you look at it, JEAN. If so you would see that NO SUCH THING appears there.
<<<<Jean continues: I am not the only one that calls him obummer, I got this term from a Dean down at Pitt that teaches Political Sciences as he is a big disappointment.>>>
"Mommy! everybody else is doing it, so that means its ok for me to do it." Good grief, JEAN, do you know how ridiculous that last sentence of yours sounds?
