Poll: Should Mitt Romney Release Five Years of Tax Returns?

So far, Romney has released his 2010 tax return and an estimated return for 2011.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's tax returns are back in the spotlight.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina offered the Romney campaign a deal on Friday: "If the Governor will release five years of returns, I commit in turn that we will not criticize him for not releasing more—neither in ads nor in other public communications or commentary for the rest of the campaign."

Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades replied:

"If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days."

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid previously charged that Romney has not paid taxes for a decade.

Romney told reporters he has paid a tax rate of at least 13 percent per year for the past 10 years.

The Obama campaign called on him to prove it.

"Mitt and Ann Romney have released their complete 2010 tax return and an estimate of their 2011 return. (A full copy of their final 2011 return will be made public as soon as it is filed in the upcoming weeks)," Romney's website states.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have posted 12 years of tax returns on the Obama-Biden campaign website.

Republican vice-presidential candidate, Rep. Paul Ryan, recently released two years of tax returns.

Romney is often reminded that his father, George, released a dozen years of tax returns when he was a candidate.

So, what should Mitt Romney do? Vote in our poll and tell us in the comments.

  • Should Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney release five years of tax returns?

(Voting has been closed for this question)
    • Yes. Five years would give a good overview of his finances.
        37 (24%)
    • No. He has released the 2010 tax return and an estimate of the 2011 tax return. Once he releases the final 2011 return, that is enough
        12 (7%)
    • He should release 12 years of tax returns like his father, Obama and Biden have.
        32 (21%)
    • Who cares about his taxes? Let's talk about the issues.

This is more Patch material that is meaningless and is used to drive up page traffic and comments. It also further reveals the political leanings of Patch.

Releasing tax returns has zero to do with the primary issues of the Presidential campaign. Nobody will use tax returns of either candidate to determine their vote.

Patch can be a great platform to inform and provide discussion. But, please use it wisely. Choosing to focus on tax returns is just a distraction from what is important.

Deductions no this loop hole no bs over here cause your ugly no your uncle smells like goat so you pay less. 10% total (5% fed, 3% state, 2% local) that's all build your budget from there. Heck 51% of this country pays NO federal tax now! Many of them get a check and don't even work.

Yeah great you wanted to show you weren't racist in 2008 now prove your not an idiot and dont vote for him again!

Really Roger? As an Independent voter Mitt will not be getting my vote unless he releases 5 years. What is he hiding? If he has nothing to hide then he should just release them. Until he does I'm going to assume he does have something to hide.

The major reason Romney should reveal his tax returns has much to do with his offshore accounts. While it may not be uncommon for extremely wealthy people to use tax havens, it does not speak highly of a person who is running for President of the United States to suggest that he does not believe in the American banking system or uses tactics to avoid paying the taxes in the US. All this brings up questions on why millionaires and billionaires can pay at a lower rate than hard working Americans. In virtually every case, wealthy Americans became wealthy because Americans bought their products or services, so it is just common courtesy to pay back into the country that made you wealthy.

Warren wanted a raise in taxes for American Millionaires but the house and senate didn't want to hear what he was saying. He did release his taxes which came out to he was paying less in a percentage as his Secretary was paying. Most millionaires agreed with him too but the House and Senate didn't want to hear it.
Warren Buffett Tells Congress To Raise Taxes On Wealthy "Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the country, wants to pay more taxes and thinks his super-rich friends should too.

Buffett, who is estimated to be worth more than $47 billion, called on Congress to commit to "shared sacrifice" and raise taxes on people earning more than $1 million. Buffett said the rich are "coddled" by Congress "as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species."

"While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks," Buffett wrote in a Sunday New York Times Op-ed."

Mitt Romney was caught lying about his taxes when he ran for Governor. He claimed he resided in Massachusetts, but he changed his legal residence to Utah when he ran the Olympics. When he was caught, he refiled all his taxes in Massachusetts, and claimed under oath he was still involved in Bain Capital (Something he now denies since that is when they started offshoring.) to prove his residency. I am sorry, but there is no reason to trust him.

There is speculation that he is hiding a felony for tax evasion. A few years ago the government offered amnesty for people illegally evading taxes in offshore accounts, and those tax returns could show him taking advantage of that amnesty. I find it interesting that when he talks about his tax returns he always talks defensively about how he legally paid what he owed as if he knows he did something wrong.

What is in the tax returns that could be worse than all he is going through by not showing them? I am sorry, but I smell at rat named Willard.

Stephanie Davis

8:35 am on Sunday, August 19, 2012

Mike- I agree. Because of previous deception, I don't believe Romney, would like to see proof of whether he paid adequate taxes, and find out if he has been hiding money to avoid paying taxes. Since he hasn't been forthcoming and has lied in the past, this doesn't enhance my trust in him as a candidate,

And Roger... who are you to dicatate what Patch should and should not use as material for its articles. Plenty of local news, in my opinion. If you're not interested in an article, let it go. I have the feeling this article got under your skin for other reasons. But you're right, this is not the only reason I would never vote for Romney.

It is up to the Internal Revenue to decide if he has done something illegal or not. Would you even know if he had if you reviewed his tax returns? Speculation is meaningless when it comes to the truth. Investing overseas is not illegal and I can tell you that anyone with a 401K invested in mutual funds is investing overseas, myself included. I say we get back to the real issues.

BHO has a history of making a big deal about anything in the past of his rivals. Since Mitt Romney is now and has been a very good boy in all his ways, BHO wants to see if he can pick apart his tax returns and make a big issue out of nothing. Any thing to deflect from BHO's terrible administration and his overspending and power grabbing.

Hiding money in offshore accounts to avoid taxes is perfectly legal, Romney has not broken any laws in that respect. What he doesn't want the average American to see is how rich he is and how he can not relate to the common American middle class citizen. He has no clue what it's like to lose your job by barely scraping by to feed your family. He has no clue what it's like to come up with the $$$ to put your kids through college. He has no idea what it's like to have huge student loan debt. This november i hope we all remember what got us into this mess and how long it will actually take to get out of it. Certainly not one presidential term.

Keeping money in an offshore account is perfectly legal. He has not broken any laws. Romney is a very wealthy man. So is Obama. So is Biden. So is Ryan. Which one of them isn't? The Clintons are. Gore is. They all are. None of them really can identify with most of us, the working people ... working to pay a mortgage, feed our families, pay our taxes (ugh) and try to put a little away.

Right now I have two in college. I am unemployed. My job was ended 2 years ago. I have not been able to find one here. I was getting unemployment. Not now.

I remember who got this country into this shape. The politicians that have been in Washington making lots of money, receiving lots of benefits, living the life of kings and queens. It was more than one. Quit blaming Bush alone. Just like it isn't Obama alone (and I do not like him) who is continually taking this country down the hole. It is ALL of them. From your local government to the federal government.

By all means, remember in November. Remember the ones raising your property taxes, school taxes, income taxes. Remember the vacations they all got. Remember the leased cars they drive on your dime. Remember the dinners, gifts, everything they take. I know I will.

Will he play the same game if he is President and withhold information from the citizens on a 'need to know' basis only? Because the so-called "mainstream media" only wants to try and find something, anything wrong with the Republican candidate and that's because this president has NOTHING to run on -- he has done ZERO for this country in the last three and half years. Saying the birth certificate is a done deal doesn't make it so, far from it actually. Producing a forged birth certificate (why would they do that exactly?) doesn't put the matter rest for the people who choose not to blind themselves to the matter. It's relevant here because we're talking about Mitt Romney and transparency. All the while, his opponent is anything but transparent. Unfortunately though, the mainstream media gives a pass (imagine the outcry if George Bush, or any other Rep. for that matter, couldn't produce a simple birth certificate.) A lawyer from Obama's legal team has admitted in court, on record, that the certificate the White House posted on its website was a forgery. Why would they go to the trouble to create an elaborate forgery of his birth certificate? I wonder...

If he had secret off shore accounts than why does everyone know about them already. How about obama releases all of his school records and everything he has hidden from the public. Is obama afraid that people will find out that he came to school here as a foreign exchange student.

Back in 2008 obama was demanding that Hilary Clinton release her tax records when she was running for president. I so wish it was Hilary Clinton was President. If obama gets re elected, he is going to have to pick all new staff and Secretary of State as Hilary said she wouldn't work under obama anymore. Can't blame her at all.

Mark Trombetta

The law requires tax returns from the past two years to be released.
Let's get to the economic and foreign policy issues where the messiah has been a failure in miserable fashion.
BHO cannot run on his record so he throws up a smoke screen. If he wants the tax records, he and Harry Reid should release their records. BHO his college transcripts [as GWB did] and Reid his tax returns; especially since he opened his mouth and accused Romney of a crime based on no evidence.
If someone told me that Reid was a pedophile, should I report it from the Senate floor before I had evidence?
Issues matter, and that is why the deflections to non-issues are coming forward en masse.
We are moving toward a socialist path and that has been accelerated under Obama. This is not surprising since he is a socialist at best and a communist most likely.
By the way, did he earn that Nobel Peace prize yet?

Peter Margliotti

1:16 pm on Sunday, August 19, 2012

This is a ploy to gen up the class warfare vote by the Obama campaign, and from the sound of the previous comments, it's working. That's a sad state of affairs for the electorate. How much money someone else made is really none of my business...or yours for that matter.
What will the candidate do during their term in office, what are their views on the social, foreign policy and national issues? That's what is really important. The ecomony is not a zero-sum game and to use an old adage, if you take water out of a lake only where the big fish swim, it still affects the whole lake. "Taxing the rich" is a red herring and tax returns are means to allow one campaign to throw mud at the other, whether its an "R" or a "D" after their name. Come on people, be smarter than the politicians and political parties give us credit for...use your head, not your emotions to decide what's best for the country.

Romney is complying with the Law. The BHO kool-aid drinkers don't want to talk about the issues, such as unemployment, the deficit that BHO has run up putting the country on the verge of bankruptcy, new taxes that are devastating American businesses, etc.

Frankly this is a diversion. What about the 50% of Americans that pay no taxes and vote for Obama because he takes my money and gives it them. No one criticizes their not paying taxes.

Obama took my money and gave it to Solyndra, and how many do they employ today. Romney took private equity and used it to build Staples, which now employees over 90,000 people.

Anyone who continues to harp on Romney's taxes are just avoiding facing the failed legacy of BHO, who if not reelected will deprive them of their kool-aid.

Exactly! The kool aid drinkers want to run this tax return thing as long as possible because Obama cannot talk about anything good he has done since in office.

It makes me sick to think there are so many who are NOT paying taxes. For example, the welfare mothers who are getting "paid" to have babies. They get housing, food, cell phone, etc. and transportation and daycare. They can get an education paid for by you and me. But the kicker is when they get a tax refund of several thousand dollars and have the audacity to complain that they are owed something. It makes me sick that they get even a dollar in a tax refund when they pay nothing.

Agree, Obama took my money as well and gave to to worthless businesses who are now in bankruptcy but their CEOs are doing well with our tax money.

Romney was not my first choice on the GOP side but I will vote for him because I believe he does have the knowledge and experience to get this country turned around and going in the right direction. If Obama gets back in, it will be more of the same crap.

Now he wants to be president and people want some transparency. Surprised?
To be fair to Obama...shouldn`t we apply the same measures of accountability to the do-nothing congress which has failed us just as bad if not worse than the President.
From where I sit neither candidate represents working and middle class people and until we start a legitimate third party we are all going to be the losers in this election. You can hate Obama all you want but voting for a rich elitist is not going to help you eiither. We need a candidate that truly represents the majority of Americans and neither one of these guys fit that description! Lots of posters here want to see Romney's tax returns. OK, let's say he produces tax returns for the last 10 years. You see the information. So what? What does the information on the tax returns tell you that you? If he made $20,000, or $2,000,000, so what? If he paid 13% in taxes on his income, or if he paid 30% on his income, so what?

We already know that anybody who makes the final list of candidates is probably somebody of some means, means that is considerably more than the typical US citizen. So to claim that "he has to be like the rest of us who scrape for food money" is a rhetorical claim, without any purpose. We know that this situation will never happen in our present political system.

Many are eager to see the tax returns. Tell us plainly and simply what you will do with the information.

EVERY SINGLE person who has ran for President has released 10 years worth...

The fact is.... his side has said, if they release 10 years worth.... that it would give the "other side" meaning Obams side food to attack....

What is in those tax returns that is so damning, that he would rather take this kind of heat , rather than just release them already and be done with it inn a day or 2????

If Obama did not release his tax returns the GOP would hammer on this like NO tomorrow....

and yes... I want to SEE he is on the up and up.....

Release them and PROVE IT....

Even his OWN party wanted to see them..... and many still do....
they are only letting it slide, cuz he is on their side....

The lack of an answer tells me that those asking for the tax information really have no interest or need of the information, but are merely wanting to use the issue as a distraction. TWO YEARS is all he is required to release. And as so many others have stated, what would you do with that information once you got it? VERIFY IT? Are you able to determine that they are truthful? People let their emotions get the best of themselves, as evidenced by some of the tripe on this board. "Every one else has released 10 years..." is that fact? And even if that is true (highly doubtful), that is more than what is required. Do you have that little to cling to that you want to see tax returns showing information that you can't possibly know is accurate?

America is in trouble. I mean, read this board...people have no concern about the economy, they're whining about tax returns from five years ago??? If we had a more educated voter base, we probably wouldn't be in this situation now. More information processed should equal less sheep...

You can find any of our Presidents School records, real birth certificate except for obama, what is he hiding. Romney complied as he only has to show 2 years and he did. Romney didn't get paid as a Governor, for the Olympics and has already said he wouldn't accept a salary as President of the United States. Lets see obama pass up a salary and his expensive trips and golf outings.

Romney has released less tax information than any other candidate in decades. He asked for more than two years when he asked Paul Ryan to be his VP. We are hiring him for a job and we are entitled to the information. Why does he not want to release these? We already know he's rich and probably does not pay enough and sends money offshore. Voter fraud is the reason. He sold his house in Massachusetts in 2009 and bought a new one in California, but he registered to vote in Mass and voted in the 2010 special election to replace Ted Kennedy. What address did he use for that? He said he was residing in his son's unfinished basement in Mass.. Sure, he was.

Let's put this silly tax issue to bed. I worked at the IRS. They are, as most government agencies, dominated by liberal Demorcrats. Believe me, they have looked at Mr. Romney's last 10 year tax returns every way possible. If they found anything amiss, they would be blaring it from the roof tops. You heard nothing because there is nothing amiss.

It should be noted that during the four years that he was Governer of Massachusetts, he accepted NO SALARY. When he went to save the Olympics, he accepted NO SALARY. When he went back to Bain Capital, he accepted a ONE DOLLAR SALARY. This guy in every respect is squeaky clean. For those of you that do not know Mormons, they are among the most honorable people on earth who live by the highest standards.

A review of the Governer's 2011 tax return indicates that he paid over THREE MILLION DOLLARS in taxes and donated 19% of his income to charity or FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. Contrast that with Mr. Biden who donated $300 to charity on his return (that's a three with two zeros). I gave more than that to Goodwill alone last year.

These are the facts, please ignore the myth.

If he only cared about making money why didn't he take a salary as governor in mass, why no salary when going to save the Olympics, why has he stated he will take no salary as president? Hmmm ...

Bain capital has saved ...Staples, Sports Authority, and multiple other companies. They are called in to help save a company, just because management has already dug the grave isn't Bain's fault. Many of those companies lasted monthes or years longer then management hoped. Oh but that's right forgot how many people has obama put out of work...how much has he stolen out of our pockets and our children's pockets. Wealthy U.S. taxpayers, concerned about an Internal Revenue Service crackdown on the use of secret overseas bank accounts as tax havens, are rushing to meet a Thursday deadline to disclose those accounts or face possible criminal prosecution. The concern was triggered this summer when Switzerland's largest bank, caught up in an international tax evasion dispute, said it would disclose the names of more than 4,000 of its U.S. account holders.

The decision shattered a long-held belief that Swiss banks would guard the identities of its American customers as carefully as they did their money, and it raised concern that other international tax havens might be next. Under an amnesty program, the IRS is allowing taxpayers to avoid prosecution for having failed to report their overseas accounts. As a result, tax attorneys across the nation have been besieged by wealthy clients who are lining up to apply even though they will still face big financial penalties.

Who wants to bet that in 2009 Romney took advantage of this amnesty? Why else would he have us wait till Oct. to see his 2011 return? His 2009 return is finished, he could release that today and there are his two years of returns for us to see. There is something on that 2009 return that will not look good for him.

I think this is a stupid issue. If you run for President, you don't have a private life anymore. Should just get with the program and show what you're about, how you live your life, how you can relate to the people that you are supposed to be representing on a national scale. I think that the argument on giving in to Dems' request for sharing his tax returns will lead to more requests, questions, and tangents from what the "real issues" are is a cop-out.

Robert A. Shoaf

First of all, I agree that Romney should release all of his relevant tax returns, as has been done by previous presidential candidates.
That being said, this is a non issue, and is yet ANOTHER diversion by the Obamacons, and their many babbling minions in the so-called mainstream media, to divert attention from THE ONE'S less than stellar ( !!! ) record after four years in office.
Obama has no real accomplisnments to run on, so, as usual, per the Chicago book of politics, just attack and lie about your opponent; some of it is certain to stick, and of course, it has.
I will admit that I am far from enamored with Romney as the Republican candidate, and I believe that he should have chosen Marco Rubio as his running mate, if for no other reason that to hopefully shore up Hispanic support, and help him in Florida. Obama is yet again fortunate that he is facing a less than scintillating candidate.
I do believe this most strongly; if Obama ends up with another four unfettered years as president, God help this country. He really does NOT believe in American exceptionalism, or a united country, but a conglomeration of voting blocs, all beholden to the government, each clamoring for their "fair share."

As stated, Romney is wealthy. As noted, the government and the IRS are loaded with liberal democrats. If there was anything improper about his taxes, that would have come out. The Dems want the tax returns as fuel for class warfare, to paint Romney as a rich, white, out of touch 1-percenter who doesn't know anything about the people's lives.

Any rational person legally does whatever he or she can to minimize tax liability. There's nothing unpatriotic about doing so. There's no economic reason to do otherwise. In all likelihood, if Romney or any other wealthy individual's taxes increase, the most likely adjustment they'll make is to reduce donations to charity in kind.

And for the people who complain that he pays 15% or less - based on the two years returns he's released, Romney has probably paid around $6 MILLION in federal income taxes in the last TWO YEARS. My guess is that nobody here, including me, will EARN or pay $6 million in taxes in their LIFETIME. So it sounds to me like Mitt and Ann Romney have paid their "fair share"... whatever that means to you libs.

@ Megan – When you say “normal American” do you mean the roughly 50% of citizens that do not pay federal income tax or the roughly 50% of citizens who support the former?

The reason this is an issue is the Obama campaign is desperate. When campaigns are centered on tax returns, dogs on top of cars, claims of cancer deaths or Ayn Rand they are bereft of ideas. When the sitting vice president has to conjure up images of slavery to a group of African-Americans, the campaign reeks of fear.

Don’t get me wrong, both sides do it. Why do they do this? Because people like you consume it greedily and spew it back out. Ultimately it's not about the President...and never has been. He's only the executive who answers to not one, but two Boards...the House and the Senate. Remember what Mitch McConnell said following the inauguration, "Our goal is to make him a one term President." When the Senate and House does nothing for four years and won't act on any of the White Houses proposals, including ones that they supported before he took office we have a problem. Blame the right people.

Obama inherited a bad situation and Congress, not the President, made it worse through inactivity. Economists overwhelmingly agreed that the stimulus package wasn't big enough but it was all Congress would agree to support. It gave the economy a kick-start but not enough fuel to sustain the type of growth we need to reduce unemployment. That's not the President's fault...it's the "I promise not to raise your taxes" crew's fault.

Here's one thing I know...never trust a politician who promises to not raise your taxes. It sounds good but the pledge is foolish. You're electing an idiot or a liar. I don't think you want either representing you. The only option opposite raising taxes is cutting programs and that's not always easy, especially when it's a program his constituents want to keep. Corner-paint-idiot. If he reluctantly raises taxes or introduces a fee (another word for tax) then he lied. Like I said...liar or idiot...neither is good.

“Economists overwhelmingly agreed that the stimulus package wasn’t big enough . . . .” Please cite some thing more concrete as this quote contains quite a few “weasel words.”

It’s also probably not a good idea to vote for someone that promises to cut the deficit in half and get unemployment under eight percent. That person is either an idiot or a liar. Not a good proposition either way.

These last ten year returns have been fully investigated in every detail. Yesterday, during the surprise press conference, Obama slighly referenced the fact that Romney showed a Swiss bank account on one of his returns. That is perfectly legal and I wish I had one. It is when you have a Swiss bank account and do not show it, that there is a problem.

What will happen when the 50% working and running businesses say why work so hard to succeed when you have to give it to people and they quit where will the money come from then. Her husband wants to serve us and she says, "you people"? She also argues the info in the tax returns will be used against Mitt; sounds like there's something to hide. Mitt is not his father. Mitt is a modern day robber baron while his father was a wealthy man who also cared about his fellow man.

It saddens one to think in as little time as a generation and a half we've gone from a nation of caring, compassionate people to one unnecessarily divided by the love of money. Guys like George Romney, Hubert Humphrey, Dwight Eisenhower, John Heinz...guys who gave a darn about the average guy. Now we've got guys who only care about lining their pockets and helping their billionaire contributors.

The trickle down effect is society as a whole is less trusting of any organization that they can view as a bureaucracy. The bickering in PTA's, boy scouts, and soccer clubs has reached a fever pitch because of perceived politics within the group. Can we all take a breath...instead of listening to the :10 sound bite and believing it...do a little research...watch Fox, MSNBC, CBS...read the New York Times, Post-Gazette, and Washington Post...get a little perspective from both sides and then decide. Let’s skip over the fact you misquoted Romney is a post regarding research and fact checking to focus on “you people.” You quote these words to set up a class-warfare argument of the “haves” v. the “have nots” rather than taking her words at face value that the “you people” she referred to was Roberts and others in the media that keep asking the Romneys to release additional tax returns. Let’s cut the derisive Occupy Wall Street propaganda if possible.

You then proceed to call Mitt “a modern day robber baron.” Is it a common practice for “robber barons” to give away ten percent of their incomes? Do you give that much away? I’m lucky to give five. Again, here we go with more OWS propaganda.

Next you wax nostalgic about the good old days when politicians cared about their fellow man while conveniently forgetting about big city political machines, court packing, war profiteering, Jim Crow, “Checkers,” Chappaquiddick, and Watergate just to name a few. Politicians are no better or worse than before. There are those on both sides who serve to better the conditions of their fellow man and those who serve to better themselves. The difference is today’s technology gives us greater insight into what politicians do or say. Wow, more OWS propaganda here – not surprising.

Your post was great in theory but lousy in execution. Take heart, maybe a job at OWS is in your future.

Liberals just don't get it. An accurate reading of history will show that when taxes are cut for everyone, it stimulates both large and small businesses to invest and expand and thereby create jobs. When you expand the work force as happened during the Bush administration, you collect more revenue....not less. Again, referring to my tax collector days as an IRS agent, once the Bush tax cuts were firmly in place, we saw revenues increase by some 9%.

When did things start to go to hell? It is no mere coincidence that this occurred in 2007 when the Democrats assumed full control of both houses. Recession is a part of a natural contraction and expansion of macro economics. They normally last for 15 to 18 months. If left alone, the free market forces of capitalism will bring us out with a roaring up serge. Why has this not happened over the last 3 years? ..... because the idiots steering the ship are relying on a "spend yourself to prosperity" mentality which through out history has NEVER WORKED. Ask the Japenese.....they are in their twelfth year of trying to make that theory work.

Does anyone find it concerning that one of the previous largest Medicare frauds of our time (just under $120 million), involved Romney. I understand the IRS can investigate, audit etc. But are we not allowed to ask questions of a man that wants to run the country that was involved in a company that defrauded Medicare? Or is that not fair to ask here?

If you really are interested in investigating Medicare fraud, please and by all means, look into the $716 billion ( with a "b") that Obama has just stolen from senior citizens to help pay for his outrageous health care bill.

this is not "stolen" money. These are cuts and reductions in payment an increase on taxes to mostly medical corps, etc. Both Ryan's plan (we do not know Romney's) and Obama's plan amounts to the roughly the same amount of "cuts."

What we are really arguing about is how we would like that money reallocated. So rather than accusing Obama of fraud or stealing, we should look into what the money removed from medicare payments or collected in the form of tax is actually going to. Federal spending does not decrease with either candidate. Historically, federal spending never decreases.

Here is a really nice politifact article:
"The Republican response to attacks on the Ryan plan has been to attack back, saying President Barack Obama has cut "$700 billion" out of Medicare. And the Democratic response to that: Well, Paul Ryan cuts that amount, too!"

How ridiculous, right?

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/15/stephanie-cutter/ryans-plan-includes-700-billion-medicare-cuts-says/

Politifact should not be your only source, but they really do a nice job of going after both campaigns and remaining nonpartisan. There articles are also easy to read and do not contain the typical hyperbolic ranting. This "stealing" parroting starts with an irresponsible simile (such and such is _like_ stealing) and then gets repeated enough into fact for a lot of people.

How can you trust Forbes magazine? It is such a liberal rag. :-)

Again, this wouldn't be an issue if Romney didn't have a history.

By the way, reducing unnecessary billings like Romney's company was busted for is one of the ways Obama wants to cut the cost of Medicare without reducing benefits. Romney/Ryan simply want to pass the costs on to the next generation of seniors which includes me. The Romney campaign is already talking about increasing the starting age for Medicare and other changes like reopening the "doughnut hole" which Obamacare closed. I guess that doesn't count as reducing benefits, however.

What's really unreasonable is the fact that people go to such great lengths to defend Obama. It's like putting your hands over your ears and saying "La la la I can't hear anything you're saying." No one can actually talk about the good things he's done; it's all slander of the previous administration ("he inherited it from Bush") or slander of his opponent in the upcoming election, to the point of using blatant untruths to defend him. It's a joke. He can't run on his record, and most of his supporters (especially on THIS site) deny truths presented to them. "What about Mitt Romney's 2005 Tax Return?" Like that even MATTERS in this election. Clutching at straws. But I guess when your candidate is a corrupt socialist with no intergrity whatsoever, you HAVE to slander the opposition.

How about his record, and I mean FACTS, not blogs (Daily Kos) or opinions? Too much to ask for.

It is not fair to claim to want unbiased facts, and then also claim that anything that anyone comes up with in defense of Obama's presidential record or plans for the future is false.

_Both_ Romney and Obama campaigns/supporters have put out a ton of lies already. To claim that it is only Obama advocates and the Obama campaign that is "using blatant untruths to defend him" is false.

I think what we have to remember is that Republicans mainly view republican news sources and the same is true of Democrats. What does one get on a Republican news source? "the Obama campaign is lying..." What does one get on the Democrat news sources? "The Romney campaign is lying..." I watch both. I know.

Truth: Both campaigns are lying.

So what are the issues that we really care about? And can we talk about them without parroting slander? Case and point, Concerned Citizen refers to Obama as a "corrupt socialist." That right there signals to me that Concerned Citizen is partaking in some very misinformed, biased, and hateful news sources. If one knows anything about socialism or communism, you know that Obama is not a socialist and does not support socialist policy and the PPACA is not socialist policy. I think most people are aware of this, so I am not going to go into detail.

Sue, I am surprised that you would champion someone calling Obama a "socialist," and proclaim that he has summed your feelings up "exactly."

The term "African American" did not come into vogue until the 90s when black people seemed to prefer that designation verses "Negro". Sounds like you are league with Rush, Hannity, Savage, Drudge, etc! Erin....sounds like you're with the Daily Kos !

Obama's interaction with radicals goes way beyond mere "association". He was trained by the Industrial Areas Foundation which was started by Mr. Alinsky, an acknowledged communist.

Obama served on the radical supporting Woods Fund (they worked in the same office).

He was mentored by Frank Marshall Davis, an avowed member of the Communist Party USA. In Obama's first book, he refers to "old Frank" being a father figure for him (old Frank was also a convicted pedifile).

Obama spent time working for ACORN, a convicted voter fraud group.

Talk about a disfunctional childhood.....Obama only saw his natural father for one week out of his whole life. The "Dreams" Obama received from that father were of a socialistic government in Kenya. His mother was named Stanley because her father really wanted a son. Obama was ultimately adopted by Lolo Santoro....moved to Indonesia and became a Muslim. By his own words, Obama stated that while in college, he was more comfortable in the presence of radical professors and students than with the normal population.

This list of radical evolvement could go on and on and on..........(Odinga, Reverand Wright, Father Flager, Kalidi, etc). Those stories, dear reader, will be reserved for another time.

Are you linking a dysfunctional childhood with socialism?

Obama worked along side the Department of Justice to defend a law that gave people the ability to register to vote when they got their license...This was the only case in which he worked with ACORN. Obama also worked on Project Vote (encouraged people to vote). This group was separate from ACORN, but they both worked on projects that encouraged urban youth and minorities, etc to vote. These are Obama's only ties with ACORN.

I don't have time to address the rest.

One of my favorite professors and greatest supporters in college is a self proclaimed "socialist" from Zimbabwe. I myself am not a socialist. I know one other socialist that is not affiliated with my school or connected to the professor in any way. If I were to run for presidency, people would see a grad school recommendation from a known supporter of socialist policy. If you would know the history behind these movements in Africa and the USA's horrendous involvement with some of these governments, then you would understand why so many Africans tend to be leery of american capitalism which has done a lot of evil in Africa (Apartheid, Patrice Lumumba). Just me recognizing these historical truths would lead you to call out "SOCIALIST!" if I were to run for political office. These are the connections that you are making.

These recommendations from this 15 member partisan appointed group become law unless they are over ridden by 60 votes of the US Senate (how likely is that to happen).

This panel is functioning under the inspiration provided by Dr. Ezekeial Emmanuel, designer of "the complete life system". Too many today seek to destroy their brothers and sisters. This is a direct result of the “dog-eat-dog” world capitalism creates. Too often we care more about designer labels than if those of us who are unfortunate have clothes to wear. Too often we see a fellow traveler with his thumb extended only seeking our assistance in finding his way get splashed with indignity by the luxury SUV that flies by without a care. Too often we endorse animal cruelty so that we can dine on foie gras while not steps away a child goes hungry.

Now is not the time to divide, but to unite. Look not with a cold heart, but with a warm one. Extend the hand of friendship, not of war. Now is the time to mend bridges, not burn them. Let us all find it within ourselves to put aside petty bickering. Let us all care more about each other than the accumulation of what we believe to be wealth. The pursuit of worldly wealth leads not to our happiness, but to our destruction. We succeed or fail together and I believe in our collective ability to succeed.

As a fellow brother has suggested, let us take a break and watch children play at the park. Let us view their innocence and come away refreshed and determined to live compassionately.

It is a very meaningful debate. You twisted Obama's quotes. History is interpretive as any historian will tell you and you are making some grand conclusions and seriously questionable interpretations. So I will maintain that you are not representing history correctly.

Here is the conclusion of the case:
The parties settled the case on May 12, 1998, with an agreement that provided for waiver of some fees for class members, should they reapply for a loan, and also for various procedures to ensure that Citibank followed its own loan policies in a race neutral way. http://www.clearinghouse.net/detail.php?id=10112

Doesn't exactly amount to the crash of banks in september 2008. This case began with one woman claiming she was denied a mortgage based on her race while white people of similar financial situations were approved. Obama was a junior lawyer on a team so not exactly championing this case.

Whether or not you are denying that redlining exists, I do not know. But, when it comes to evaluating history, it is _always_ a mistake to say that one instance (in this case an unrelated instance of racial discrimination that was settled out of court) led to a catastrophe. Obama worked on a lot of cases fighting against discrimination of minorities. That is a good thing.

So are you saying that redlining (discriminating against minorities in the cases of loans and such) does not exist but is actually a cover? A cover for what?

Do you have sources for these heavy interpretations that are not the right wing equivalent of the Daily Kos or other left wing blogs? I cannot find any. ACORN championed many racial discrimination cases. I am just looking for a source.

Well actually, I have to quit now bc I am going to be late for dinner reservations.

I will check back later as I am interested and would love some unbiased, nonpartisan, intelligent sources. I am not always a big fan of Obama, but his minor associations with ACORN were not evil. He was fighting a good fight.

You say that because Obama was a junior member on this panel of lawyers in this case, Obama must have been a part of ACORN's voter fraud and obviously committed some dirty dealings.

I will agree. So using the same reasoning...

Romney was on the board of directors for Damon when they were committing fraud against medicare and sold the company the same month that the subpoenas were issued. So Romney was guilty of fraud.

So why are we not demanding a legitimate third party candidate since both of these politicians, using your own reasoning, are both scandalous frauds?

Dear Joe Gennetti,
The "Why won't he release more tax returns?" question is a loaded question fallacy. It predisposes that there is something there to hide. Given that we know Romney to be wealthy, just like Obama, it is almost a certainty that the IRS has reviewed his returns very closely. If there was an issue, the IRS would have dealt with it. I believe that this is both a “squirrel” issue to distract from the real issues and it is a fishing expedition, by which the opposition will demagogue anything they can (e.g.: class warfare). Romney will likely not release any other returns other than his 2012 return. I hope you don't exclude him for consideration based solely on that. Thanks.

Did you mean "niga loans?" Because that is either a very unfortunate misspelling or you just made an incredibly offensive and racist statement. I am going to believe that it was an unintended misspelling.

I see that you have not been able to address section 3403. He advocates abortion, late term abortion, accidental birth killing, aborting life up to six months, assisted suicide and euthanasia. These are the building blocks the 15 member panel is using to structure the foundation for the medical standards that, God forbid, we have to face if this horrible legislation becomes law in 2014.

She made nonsensical rebuttals to my posts too, and I notice that not only did she put words in my mouth, she took issue with me calling Obama a socialist (but the posts above calling Romney a felon are just fine with her).

I think that if you are this passionate about a political debate, you need to host your own blog, not use your position as editor to state your views (and insult others with your arrogance). You made a statement that I don't know anything about communism or socialism because I called Obama a socialist; how do you know that? (no one even mentioned communism, maybe you don't know the difference...?) It's okay to disagree with my opinion, but don't call me stupid because I don't agree with you. You're no better than any of the other namecallers on this site.

I am officially done with Patch. I had been reading it to find out what's going on in my community, but it's not even useful for that anymore. Letting an editor of a site call people names and incite anger is irresponsible, and if your need to weigh in on a political matter with your ultra liberal positions is too great to resist, then maybe you need to step down as editor.

This site is a joke. Not a funny joke either. You can keep it.

As for monitoring the comments section, it's very difficult to do when we have hundreds of them coming in each day. It's very difficult to patrol and, unfortunately, things slip through the cracks. Since it seems like things are getting out of control (have been out of control?) I'll discuss with my boss about shutting down the comments section. It's probably time to move onto other topics anyway. And we'd love to have everyone comment on some of the happier stories we post. Take care, and thanks for reading.

It's obvious Mary Ann know it all loves to hear herself talk. Stay objective Erin. Don't lower yourself to her level.

So what if it said his dad was African. Maybe he was. What does that have to do with where his child was born? It's where you're born not where your parents are from. Then again, only people like you made his birth certificate an issue. Move to another country if you don't like who was elected into the presidency by the american people. And put on your tin foil hat while you're at it.

And an editor (especially one trying to come across as smarter than everyone else) should know the difference between a NEWS SOURCE and a BLOG.

Yeah, you're a genius alright.
