PA Politicos Split on Who Won Second Presidential Debate

Patch flash surveys of GOP and Democratic activists in Pennsylvania show diverging views of Tuesday's presidential debate.

A non-scientific sampling of Pennsylvania Democrats and Republicans shows they agree that national media will view President Barack Obama as the consensus winner of the second presidential debate —a town hall-style forum at Hofstra Univefsity.

"Overall, good debate.  Mitt shined, but was less shiny with the very assertive Mr. Obama.  Anything was better than last time for Obama, so that will be the take away from this debate," said a GOP survey taker.

Patch conducted Red Keystone and Blue Keystone flash surveys overnight of Pennsylvanians who are in involved in politics—elected officials, candidates and party activists.

Who won the debate?

Of 25 Democrats who responded, 17 said Obama won by a wide margin and four said he won by a slim margin. Two said former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the debate. All but one said Obama would be declared the winner by national media.

Seventeen Republicans were more mixed in their assessment. Eight said Romney won by a slim margin while one said the former governor won by a wide margin. Three said Obama won, while four were neutral and one had no opinion.

The Republicans largely agreed that Obama would be proclaimed winner of the debate—most said by a slim margin.

Will the debate sway Pennsylvania voters?

Nine Republicans either strongly or somewhat agree that the debate will help Romney win votes in Pennsylvania. Sixteen Democrats feel that way about the debate helping Obama in the Keystone state.

One respondent commented, "The debate will not significant(ly) effect the outcome of the election. It is the ground game of persuading voters and getting them out to vote. With Obama's more than 37 field offices in Pennsylvania compared to Romney's 6, Obama is well poised to win Pennsylvania."

What was the most memorable moment?

Several Democrats and Republicans both singled out comments on Libya and moderator Candy Crowley's instant "fact check" of Romney as the debate's most memorable moment. A GOP respondent accused Crowley of "inaccurately refereeing in favor of Obama on 'terror.' "

Energy policy and women's issues were other highlights, the survey takers said.

"Contraception and women's health won back women voters who had slid to Romney," was one comment from the surveys.

Another respondent wrote that a highlight was "Gov. Romney ignoring the question that women don't need to be paid the same as men for the same job and women need flexibility so they can make dinner for their family. Is this 1952?"

Here are further comments from the surveys:

  • Neither candidate really answered any question but defaulted to embellished, dueling talking points.
  • President Obama will need to continue to work hard to counteract Romney's lift from the first debate.
  • Obama helped consolidate his base; Romney eked further inroads into undecideds, most importantly.
  • I'm very happy that (Obama) stood on stage and stood for his constituents.
  • I'm very concerned about all the lies Romney has been caught in.  It seems he says what he thinks people want to hear, and after the event they have to backtrack his statements.
  • As a person who never went to college but has achieved what I have by hard work, this concept of everyone needs to attend college is simply not true. We need everyone at all levels to make this country great again. The working class has not been represented well in recent years.

"All but one said Obama would be declared the winner by national media."
"The Republicans largely agreed that Obama would be proclaimed winner of the debate—most said by a slim margin."

Sounds pretty straightforward to me who won the debate.

I believe that Romney kept to the issues and Obama kept to his memorized speech. I vote for Romney--

You are delusional. Obama exudes intelligence, command and most of all, sincerity. Romney had nothing but bullying strategy taking advantage of the difficult times not recognizing the many accomplishments of Obama's administration in spite of the deep recession and war on terrorism he inherited from the previous administration. Romney is your typical lying, cheating, insincere business man who hides under a fake smile. What really are his credentials (besides the money and business he inherited) ?

Even watching the Fox post debate banter, nobody was in denial about Obama's victory, except the ever delusional Sean Shammity.

Fact checking the debate and Romney's pants are on fire (and we are not even talking about the most obvious flub on stage regarding Libya)...

Please, please save the Breaking New Alert for breaking news! Surely there must be some standard by which jounalist can determine whether a story qualifies for a Breaking News Alert or not. I do not think how some local activists determine the winner and loser of a debate qualifies as Breaking News Alert.

And the winner was.... Candy! She landed the best shots against Romney. Yep Obama needed a hand and she helped, and handily since she knew all the questions before hand. Great team player Candy!!!

Inserting herself as the factchecker on the Lybia matter was a huge blunder on her part. The sad part is that her facts were wrong to boot.

I understood the rules of the debate included "no questions from the moderator." Ms Crowley stated openly before the event that she intended to ask follow-up questions, clearly a violation of the rules. Were the rules changed at the last minute, enabling her to ask the follow-up questions?

Remind me again why a journalist has to be the moderator of these events?

Well, of course EVERYONE in the NATIONAL MEDIA will claim obumma the winner. They have all been in the tank for him for the past 4 years and longer!. Hmmm, I wonder if EVERYONE in Hollywood will declare him the winner too! I agree with Diane, save the breaking news alert for actual "breaking news"!!

The bigger news is the new Gallup poll that has Romney up now 51% to 45%. Obama may be exciting his base and the main street media but the undecideds are moving over to Romney and that is what will win this election.

Who in their right mind except delusional liberals would declare Obama the "overwhelming winner" of this debate? Wishful thinking for them, I suppose. Romney make Obama look like a lying fool when questiong how many drilling permits he revoked. And when he pointed out that Obama himself has investments in China and his own off-shore accounts, Obama was trying to get his partner, Candy Crawley to bail him out! Just because Obama was more confrontational - does not mean he won the debate. As usuall, he was all style and no substance. When liberals have no record to stand on - they should "lies.... All lies!!" Show me one thing that Romney lied about - please. We are all waiting!

What Romney lied about? How about EVERYTHING! The repeal of Obamacare, the terrorists statement by Obama, the 47%, taking away funding for PBS, planned parenthood, Headstart programs, etc. etc. and going back and forth depending on the situation he is in at the moment.

NE12Ukid - Oh - that's so hard to do, right! Just log on to your liberal websites and copy links from other liberals pointing out "discrepancies" and "misquotes". I could do the very same thing on Obama! Give me a break. Every candidate has off the cuff remarks that may not be 100% accurate. That's a big difference than LYING! Get over yourself. I could go on all day about Obama's lies..... and I don't need to copy and paste links from a website. Just watch the man speak.....nothing but B.S. comes out of his mouth!

KMB... What are you talking about??? Nothing you said made any sense, and NONE of what you said were lies? They are his policies. What is a "lie" about repealing Obama care? What is a "lie" about taking away funding for PBS? What is a "lie" about saying Obama never called the Bengahzi attack terrorism? You don't have to agree with Romney or his policies, but don't resort to calling everything that you disagree with a "lie". That's very kindergarten. (Then of course - you are a liberal .) And any common sense person who has ever developed a marketing plan, or ran a campaign knows not to "worry" or "focus" on a target audience that will not change their mind. Everyone knows he was talking about campaign strategy, and not worrying about the 47% of people who won't vote for him anyway. He also doesn't have to "worry" about the 53% who WILL VOTE FOR HIM. People are morons!

Now everyone knows that Romney said, "The first thing I will do is repeal Obamacare" and now he says he will keep much of it, the terrorism remark is stupid and grasping at straws by Romney, he already spoke of cutting programs that middle class needs and now he is again backtracking, and as far as the 47% and your so called marketing plan. It is moronic to disregard ANY potential votes, that is good marketing. Who ever says, "Oh well we don't need them anyway" That's the dumbest statement I've ever heard, the WHOLE point of these debates is to change people's minds

KMB - you need to pay better attention. Romney WILL NOT keep much of Obama Care. He will repeal the whole thing on day 1 in office. That has been his platform the entire time. On what planet did you watch the debate last night? As far as the 47% - when you have $ to spend against different audiences - you spend it against the ones that can be influenced to change their minds. You don't waste your time and money banging your head against the wall trying to convince a specific target audience to change their mind when they are too dumb and stubborn to do so. This is why Romney (and Obama) are spending their ad $ on the "swing states". Romney isn't spending a dime nor any of his time in the state of California. Because they are a lost cause. If you take his 47% comment in the right context - you will understand that.

Oh and P.S..... An off-hand comment by Obama that "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this nation,” is nowhere near the same as specifically calling the Benghazi attacks as terrorism!
He did not say “terrorism”—and it took the administration days to concede that that it was an “act of terrorism."

A group of Libyans attack our embassy and you're sitting around waiting for the president to call it terrorism? Just call me next time one of our embassys is attacked in the Middle East and I'll let you know.

This is one of the goofiest arguments to come out of this debate. A bunch of people sitting home waiting to be told a terrorist attack is a terrorist attack. The Romney bunch is really grasping at straws.

JS... We ALL KNEW it was a terrorist attack. Nobody is waiting for the President to call it Terrorism. The point is HONESTY WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. He tried to cover this up for 2 weeks so it didn't look bad on his watch. So that his Foriegn policy wouldn't look innefective. What president trying to get re-elected wants to have a terrorist attack on his watch 3 weeks before an election? His tap-dancing around the subject, and his evading calling it what it was (and what everyone else knew it was) shows his lack of leadership, character, and honesty. He will do ANYTHING to get re-elected - even if it means misleading the American people. *P.S.... The ones grasping at straws are the ones who are TRAILING in the polls......i.e.....Obama zombies.

Here's a quote from Obama's speech on Sept. 12, one day after the attack. This was not an off-hand comment, it was in an official speech given at the White House. Sorry that many on the right need the word "terrorism" in there instead of "acts of terror", I guess some are easily confused.

"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done."

Seems clear to me that he plans to find out who did this "act of terror", I don't understand how it can be confusing. Maybe his speech writers need to dumb things down a little for some.

An example of an off-hand comment would be Romney, the day of the attack, politicizing the deaths of Americans -
“I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

You might notice that in addition to the obvious lies, he never mentioned terrorism in his statement. He never even mentioned "acts of terror", which apparently are different from terrorism in some eyes.

JS, you left off the two preceeding paragraphs:
Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.

As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it. Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

He was talking about 9/11/2001 immediately before making that statement and many think that is the act of terror he is refering to. I think it is ambiguous and can be interpreted either way. I also don't see it as really an issue since he said days later that he won't call it an act of terror yet....(i.e. on the View). What I do see as an issue is that he didn't call it an act of terror at the UN. He played softball in that speech and pulled back to the video.

No kidding. I think national political discussion is fine for this site, but calling it breaking news and putting this stuff center stage really takes away from the purpose of this site. I could go to any number of national media outlets to get this same kind of discussion. Why don't the editors of this site try to give this a local spin? The virtue of The Patch is that this is where news that I can't read anywhere else about my local community is put front and center. To me, all this national election stuff just seems out of place here.

If there is a "lotta Sour Grapes" - then that must mean there are a "Lotta Romney supporters" in PA. That should raise a big RED flag to the Liberals out there. Obama could have come out on stage drunk, and in a batman suit and tripped over the microphone cord, and the mainstream media and all the liberals would have claimed that he "won" the debate. They were just looking for any sign of life whatsover to claim a "decisive victory!". All Obama had to do was show up. Please! Nothing this "performer in chief" said last night was new, or insightful, or powerful enough to save his A** from getting fired. Look at the polls.

Daniel- I'd have to say your parroting of the right wing talking points has been perfected, whether they're true or not.

It was widely agreed, by mainstream (corporate-owned) media or Fox or MSNBC or liberal political sites that Romney won the first debate. How do you get from there to Obama would have been declared the winner of the last debate no matter what. I realize you probably hear "liberal media" blasted into your head every day, but your paranoia is showing.

You keep bringing up polls like they're gospel. The polls all show the people, not the media, think Obama won the debate. Do you ignore these polls but think the few polls that show Romney leading Obama in the election mean he's a lock? Check the websites that list a bunch of different polls, you'll see that Obama is leading in most of them. Cherry picking poll numbers doesn't really give a true picture.

I believe Romney was ko'd in the last round, he staggered was woobly on his feet from the pummeling he took from Obama in the previously rounds. The headline should read "After a severe pummeling Romney fell to the mat hard, he staggered to his feet but there that could be done to get him up."

I think Jill Stein won myself. She was arrested trying to crash the party last night, and while handcuffed made the case for the loss of democracy as the most fundamental right the people have to electing their leaders; hearing candidates who are on the ballot in enough states to win the election. 'The country is more then two parties,' she said. -- I agree.... The Independents are scheduled for some debates among themselves (although they invited both Romney and Obama, and they declined) this next week. Give yourself a break and listen to them. For Tuesday evening's debate I think Obama probably took home the 'W' -- but I would consider it pretty much even as I graded their first one. -- These fellows needs some real challenge that the moderators won't give, another candidate or two standing along beside them.. Jill has the intellect and the moxie to create a small tsunami in a very short time if given the chance. -- Maybe that's the problem. -- Anyway, so much for sour grapes as you say.
