New Grocery Store Opening in South Fayette
An Aldi’s low price grocery store is expected to open in South Fayette near the Bridgeville exit off Interstate 79.
An Aldi’s low price grocery store is expected to open in South Fayette near the Bridgeville exit off Interstate 79.
The eight acres of land directly behind the former Exxon gas station is expected to be built into a shopping center called The Crossings at South Fayette with Aldi’s becoming the anchor tenant, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
A bank, restaurant, drive-thru coffee and other businesses also might move into the proposed shopping center, the newspaper reported.
The Bridgeville Fuel Stop gas station next to McDonald’s would be demolished to build an entrance to the shopping center that connects to the Route 50 and Washington Pike intersection. Two other entrances would be built on Daniell Drive near the GetGo gas station.
The P-G reported that South Fayette Township commissioners are expected to vote on the development plans during their March 27 meeting.
A construction timeline is not available yet.

Because there isn't enough traffic at that intersection?

Wash Pike coming from Bursca has been a mess ever since GetGo went in and they installed a light at Daniell. Can't wait to see this grand experiment.

Good comment... never thought of the traffic. I am sure that wonderful PennDot has their plans in motion so we do not have to worry about it. I am curious though where the Aldi's is going. I thought it was going where the 84 Lumber used to be but I must be wrong..

@clint eastwood . If the South Fayette PD didn’t direct traffic at Washington Pike and Route 50, it would be a complete mess during rush hour. They do a great job keeping the vehicles moving. I have never had a problem there and I go through that intersection on a daily basis.

@clint eastwood. It’s called normal rush hour traffic and it’s everywhere. Have you ever driven into the city in the morning? Maybe I just have patience, unlike you. I guess you don’t remember how bad it was in that area prior to the police directing traffic. And you’re right, my name says it all…some people like you STILL AMAZE ME.

Well Clint here’s a suggestion… While you’re sitting for “hours watching the light change” on Chartiers Street, how about you think of an alternate route, take it, and quit complaining. You’re welcome for the advice, I hope it helps.

What alternate route? Mayview to Boyce? Prestley to Thoms Run? Wash Pike to Kirwan Heights exit? There aren't any good options.

Yeah, driving down there is pretty lame. I avoid it as much as I can.

Well it is a week later, and after reading these comments I have to agree with everyone but AMAZE ME. I have lived in this area for 32 years [20 years off of Washington Pike and 12 years off of Rte. 50] and traffic IS bad. As a life long resident of Bridgeville [I'm in my late 50s] I have seen many changes to this area. As a taxpayer to this beautiful? S.F. township I am tired of SITTING in traffic where ever I go. Should a 2 mile trip to Rite-Aid take an half an hour? NO!

Kathleen is right about the notice being one week old. And, her observation is right -- most comments are negative.
This announcement confirms my idea expressed in other threads about announcements of new businesses arriving in the area. The tone of the comments reflects the subject of the announcement.
If the residents are excited about the new business, the comments are mostly positive, "Can't wait ...," and similar. If the residents don't like the business, the comments are mostly negative. Reasons for the negative comments are unrelated to the business. If residents have a negative perspective of the new business, then any reason for condemning the new business will work. In this case, the traffic is often cited as the reason.
Consider Patch stories on the new Dicks and Target moving to SHV. People were excited to have a bigger Dicks store and excited to have a Target nearby. Traffic was not a problem. When Bonefish was proposed to be built in the parking lot, "Can't wait...," "So glad this is coming to our area ...," and similar. Traffic was not an issue. Meanwhile, when a new business is proposed across the street, "No, this is crazy, ... traffic is too much in that area ...."
Often, when a Wal-Mart is proposed for an area, "No, ... damage to our neighborhood ...," "Too much traffic already ...."
In this case, few seem to be anxious about shopping at Aldi. True to form, "Bad idea ...." The direct relationship is confirmed.

I guess your perspective is different when you're sitting on Washington Pike for a half-hour trying to get from Shop'n Save to the Bridgeville exit... Or if you're waiting four light cycles on Chartiers Street in Bridgeville.

I could care less if the new store is an Aldis. My concern is if you keep bringing new business to the area, you are bringing more people. More people equal more TRAFFIC. As a taxpayer in S.F. I have yet to see my taxes go down. All I am getting for my money is more waiting. Lets stop the insanity!!

Wow! Between Newbury Market, the new development at Bedner's Farm in Upper St. Clair, the Aldi Project, and the existing traffic disaster, our infrastructure really cannot handle anything more. Further, our police force does a TREMENDOUS job keeping that intersection moving safely, but truly their time and talents should be elsewhere. It isn't commonplace for officers to act as traffic signals on a daily basis in most towns. It has to be frustrating to them--not to mention it is expensive to all of us who pay our taxes!
I don't mind Aldi and I love it when several stores choose to compete in my market--that's the stuff of a healthy economy! My comments are not against their stores per se, but I'd rather see them in a less congested area.
Perhaps things will improve if/when Giant Eagle moves into the Newbury complex and some of the South Fayette traffic doesn't have to come into Bridgeville to run errands. One can only hope...

Agree with the other comments, this area is at critical mass as far as traffic goes...you can't keep cramming more and more cars through that one intersection and expect things to run smoothly. The officer directing traffic there is clueless and needs to be replaced with efficiently timed signals that are tied into the other ones nearby. The officer thinks he's doing a great job by allowing northbound Morganza left-turn traffic to proceed, and proceed, and proceed for 5 straight minutes, but he's screwing the people stuck on Chartiers or Hickory Grade who are trying to get to Route 50 but can't move because the officer is forcing all of these intersections into gridlock by not allowing the signals to do their job and move ALL traffic, not just the direction with the most of it. This shouldn't be so complicated...it's obvious somepplstillamazeme is coming from one of the directions that's not as badly affected by this, whereas people on Chartiers are lucky if 3 or 4 cars get through on a green light.
PennDOT needs to get on the ball too....no reason for all of SF traffic to get directed off the interstate and straight onto route 50 through Heidelberg or Bridgeville, adding so much congestion while most of these people are trying to get to the west side of the highway anyways, yet must navigate through the towns to get to SF. What about an off ramp to Prestley Road, or an exit for Newbury that ties to Presto-Sygan Rd? No foresight whatsoever!!
