Jerry Sandusky Sentenced to 30-60 Years for Child Molestation
The former Penn State assistant football coach maintains his innocence and vows to continue to appeal his conviction.
This story was updated at 11:17 a.m.
McKean County Judge John M. Cleland today sentenced Jerry Sandusky to no less than 30 years and no more than 60 years in prison for sexually abusing 10 children, multiple media outlets report.
“The crime is not only what you did to their bodies, but their psyches and souls,” Judge Cleland told Sandusky in court, the Pittsburgh Tribune reported. “It is this remarkable ability to deceive that makes this crime so heinous.”
A defiant Sandusky gave a rambling statement in which he denied the allegations and talked about his life in prison and the pain of being away from his family.
“It is for those still standing for us that we will continue to fight,” Sandusky said. “We’re definitely in the fourth quarter.”
Three victims spoke, often fighting back tears. One looked Sandusky in the eyes at times during his statement, the Associated Press reported.
In court, state prosecutor Joseph McGettigan called Sandusky “the most insidious and deprvated of criminals.” He read a statement from the young man identified as “Victim No. 1,” who said he cannot put into words the “pain and misery (Sandusky) caused me.”
“Jerry Sandusky humiliated me beyond description,” the man’s statement reads, according to the Tribune Review.
The sentence means Sandusky, 68, won't be eligible for parole until he is 98-years-old.
His attorney, Joe Amendola, speaking outside the courthouse after the sentence was handed down, asserted that there was a "rush to judgement" against his client, the late Joe Paterno, and former Penn State President Graham Spanier.
"He will complain there wasn't time enough to prove his innocence," McGettigan said in court, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported. "There's not time enough in the world for him to prove that lie."
After the sentencing, Penn State president Rodney Erickson issued a statement, emailed to news outlets.
"Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sandusky's abuse," Mr Erickson said in the statement. "While today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events and help them continue down the road to recovery."
On the eve of his sentencing, Sandusky blamed his plight on one of the victims. Calling the young man a "veteran accuser and always sought attention," he started everything; Mr. Sandusky said in a statement he read Monday on Penn State's student-run radio station, ComRadio.
Sandusky went on to say that a "well-orchestrated effort of the media, investigators, the system, Penn State, psychologists, civil attorneys and other accusers" backed up the young man's false allegations."

Sandusky was convicted June 22 on 45 of the 48 counts against him.
The investigation into the University's handling of the Sandusky scandal resulted in severe sanctions by the NCAA.
It also prompted the University to remove the statue of iconic coach Joe Paterno from outside Penn State's Beaver Stadium.

He should end up in a maximum security facility. Then he would know how his victims felt.

I disagree with most of the sentiments given. I thought OJ was guilty, too, but my wife thought he was innocent. -- Sandusky is a human being, as well, and in need of recovery as does his victims. As human beings we are all 100% social, sexual and spiritual beings. There is no compartmentalization here. Nature (creation) and nurture (culture) doesn't always agree on the rules of living together. Some flowers never fully mature for reasons of its own, still, we judge it from what it should be, -- we think. The violation should be addressed fairly, but including the understanding that the flower hasn't fully bloomed into the creation it was intended to be. There is a reason for that and I predict that it is more complicated then what a simple judgment can tell us. To be penalized for the offense should be expected given the best understanding of growing up in a 20th and 21st century society, however, punishment should never happen.

James, that has to be one of the most disturbing posts I've ever read. You can't be serious...really?
You must not have children. If you do, would you be so forgiving if had been one of your children? And if so, maybe someone should take a closer look at you. Defending child rape? I really have no words that could make you seem any worse of a person than you already have.

Probably so, but I cannot understand how many thought 30-60 years for a man of 67 was too lenient? Should he have been executed? That would cost the State even more. And we are not quite Texas style execution eager (yet).
What did he say?

James...your comments are like those of molesters. "little flowers, blooming", nature and culture....very disturbing indeed. It's that kind of distorted thinking that "permits" perpetrators to do the inevitable to children. I hope you are not around children with that thinking....and you may just need to get a mental health evaluation yourself to determine if you need some counseling.

I was away from news all day, and just learned of the decision on the radio news. I'll leave the Sandusky discussion to others.
But, part of the radio news of the court scene included a segment saying one of the victims testified, "I don't forgive you, and never will..." Maybe somebody can correct me if I heard this wrong. This statement was more startling to me than the sentence for Sandusky.
Assuming I heard rightly, this victim will do himself more harm that Sandusky. Living with an unforgiving heart will eat this person alive. The bitterness will linger and he will never get out from under the matter. Yes, Sandusky is a man who needs help, but this victim needs lots of help too.
Do I understand rightly that one of the victims has written (is intending?) to write a book?

Parent 2- I must say that since my wife died a little over 3 years ago I have listened to some music CDs and DVDs I have collected over the years to bring me solace and presence again and again, and for me it works. Sir Yehudi Menuhin's Mozart, Dvorak, Andries Segovia's The Intimate Guitar, Vittorio, Il Divo, Josh Groban, The musical score on the movie Schindler's List and many musicals. Right now it's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I have heard them all hundreds of times, and yes, Jackie Evancho. I have actually told my 4 sons and 8 grandchildren and my church (Unitarian Universalist) and those that I work with as a volunteer on several outings a week. She is a sweetheart, and I would suggest that her whole family deserves a lot of the credit, too; Mike, lisa, Jacob, Zack, and Rachel.
Concern Cit- My sons are in their 40s now and are very aware of their father's position on this issue and every other one. I am a progressive with a liberation impulse, I say. All life is sacred to me, but it is understandable to swat a fly when it is annoying you. Human life at this moment is a very violent species to creation and each other. I wasn't talking about forgiveness at all. That's a subject to itself, but could it happen? Maybe -- in time, and maybe not. -- Sandusky is ill, and is in need of long term therapeutic treatment. Can he be cured? Who knows. In some cases, yes, -- some, no. I don't believe in 'throw-a-ways.'
I will have to finish this on another comment.

Oh, I see the light now. Many thanks for allowing me to understand.
After all, Stalin was just misunderstood, and his murderous paranoia just need the treatment of a good shrink, sadly lacking in the " workers paradise."
And, poor Hitler; if only somebody would have given him a break and bought his paintings! After all, he loved animals & kids( as long as the were Aryan), and was an opera devotee. Another misunderstood guy!
If only they could have been treated early on, or better yet, rehabilitated after a decade or so of mass murder. Get em jobs as greeters at Walmart.
After all, as you say. we don't want to " pervert" justice; "simply revenge" is baaaaadddd!
I'm certain that the millions killed in Uncle Joe's induced famines in the Ukraine, and in the purges would understand, along with ol' Adolf's victims in Auschwitz, Treblinka, Dachau, etc. as well. Hey, they were "bent a little", like all of us, right???

Sandusky's crime was grotesque and horrible, and his penalty deserves a severe statement to that fact, but if his sentence is given without the hope and help toward recovery then everyone loses, and justice has been perverted. To do otherwise is simply revenge.
Robert A. Shoat-- The use of the word 'flower' is an analogy of us. We are all bent a little bit. Some has greater problems fitting in then others do as they mature. We are not born 'whole' - we grow up as we are able (nature-nurture). Culture is really our surrogate parents, and it take the seed that we are (nature) and sometimes do a good job and sometimes not (nurture). -- We really do belong to each other. In other words Sandusky, and his victims needs everyone's concern, and we should help them.
Susan-- What Sandusky did deserves your hate, and society should judge him for that, but his life is as sacred as yours and mine and all of us is. Penalty? Yes. Punishment? No. We all deserve humanity's best gift; respect and acceptance as a human being.

When someone does something like this and feels like there is nothing wrong with what they did and feels no remorse they are probably a sociopath. A sociopath has no conscience or guilt. I don't believe someone like this can be rehabilitated no matter how much "therapy" they go through. What's even worse is that he blamed the victims and is trying to turn things around to make himself look like the victim. I think when someone is a perv like this, it's their nature and not a "mistake" like accidently going through a stop sign. I think it would be nearly impossible to change / rehabilitate someone like this. More than likely he will learn the right things to say and find God to try to get paroled. I don't think it's worth the risk to try to fix them and let them back into society among children again. I hope he gets in prison what he dished out, that way the punishment will fit the crime. I'm so sick of people feeling sorry for the criminal and worrying about their rights instead of the victims.

James,
Thank God Almighty you were never made a judge! The families of victims would be left to suffer without justice ever being served for their loved ones who were victims of ruthless criminals. People would be forced to live in fear, and some would take up like vigilantes and get revenge, sometimes killing the innocent. Criminals could happily kill, steel, and do whatever comes to their mind to do without the fear of doing time behind bars, or having to give account for their actions. Stop feeding us your line of garbage, calling it forgiveness. It is up to the victim to forgive the perpetrator, but it is up the courts to serve justice and the law. If the man is guilty, he must pay for his crimes he has committed. Stop confusing human beings for beasts! We have been endowed with a brain and a conscience.

I would like to move on from Sandusky and see authorities get to the bottom of what became of the DA, Ray Gricar, who was investigating this in the very beginning and went missing all these years. There is a murderer out there AND accomplices. I think this runs very deep, with many dirty hands...

It's obvious that "James Dale Barrington" is making these statements for a response, and should not be allowed to post on Patch. Not because everyone disagrees with him (well, anyone not brain dead, anyway), he has a right to state opinions like anyone else. But it's clear with his defending Hitler and Stalin that he is clearly just trying to get a rise out of people and not have open discourse. Please ignore these ramblings until someone at Patch deletes his posts.
Again, "James Dale Barrington", it's not that you have opinions that run the opposite of any civilized society that I take issue with. It's the fact that you are clearly just trying to get a rise out of people.

I have a hard time feeling the same way, but I get not answering violence with violence and not wishing for Sandusky to be raped in prison until he dies at which point he should burn in heck forever...Yeah, I don't wish that. Should he be imprisoned? Absolutely. Do I agree with our prison systems? No. Child molesters aside you raise a good point about the kind of person that we seek to create when imprisoning someone for _victimless_ crimes. In this case, he had very clear victims.
We have a flawed system when imprisonment is supposed to be a threat to other potential offenders. Obviously, Sandusky's arrest is not going to deter other people from hurting children. So where do you go next? Public branding in the street? Torture? Burned at the stake? We have been there as a society and it has failed while hurting a lot of innocent people so there is something to be said for analyzing what imprisonment is; a safety measure for the public or a punishment. At least that is what this situation and your posts make me consider.

Anyone who defends child rape, Hitler and Stalin AND states that we DESERVED 9/11 isn't worth writing a comment about, regardless of how many degrees they have. As if this post wasn't enough, I saw another self-serving comment stating that we deserved 9/11 and it wasn't an act of terrorism. To me there is no worse crime than harming a child. And what Sandusky did is the most despicable kind of harm. People like Sandusky cannot be rehabilitated - look at how many crimes against children are committed by repeat child abuse offenders. The answer to the problem is simple - put Sandusky in the general population and let nature take it's course.

I never said any of that. I certainly never defended a child rapist, and my quotes are right above if anyone would like to check them out. I certainly never said that 9/11 was not a terrorist attack, and I most certainly never said that any victim of 9/11 deserved to die.
Your comments are to the point where you are being incredibly offensive, personally insulting, and obstructive to any sort of decent conversation. 8 comments saying that I am defending child rapists?
And this is because I chose to defend someone that people on this thread are insinuating to be a pedophile (That would be James and not Sandusky)? Is there a line here maybe? I think there is, and I think it has been seriously crossed. A troll makes little comment on the subject but only participates to anger others and bring conversations to a halt through that anger. That is what you are doing, and you should be ashamed of yourself especially considering this superior maturity that you are implying to have in comparison with me.
