Superstorm Sandy Blows Through Pittsburgh

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy whipped through western Pennsylvania and drenched the region, but left most area communities unscathed overnight.

There were numerous reports of downed trees and powerlines, but the damage did not appear to be catastrophic or widespread.

The Chartiers Valley School District canceled classes Tuesday due to the inclement weather.

Meanwhile, most South Hills communities postponed their Halloween Trick-or-Treat until Saturday night.

Duquesne Light reported about 650 customers were without power late Monday night, although most were in sporadic areas around Allegheny and Beaver counties. However, West Penn Power reported that more than 1,000 customers were without power in North Fayette and neighboring South Fayette.

The Chartiers Creek, which overflowed its banks when the remnants of Hurricane Ivan blew through in 2004, had risen slightly overnight. However, the creek crested at 5.3 feet–that’s nearly 15 feet below flood stage in Heidelberg–by 6 a.m. Tuesday. Heidelberg officials said Tuesday morning they've experienced "no problems" with the creek.

11:18 p.m. – Firefighters were dispatched to a trash fire at Kirwan Heights Industrial Park. The fire apparently started in the back of a a garbage truck, but the driver was able to dump the load without damaging the vehicle. Crews immediately arrived on scene and were able to control the fire.

10:15 p.m. – Duquesne Light reports 650 customers are without power in western Pennsylvania. "Duquesne Light crews are in the process of restoring power by removing trees and repairing downed wires. Downed wires are a safety hazard and should be avoided. They pose the danger of electrical shock and injury. Residents are advised to not drive over or go near downed wires."

9:53 p.m. – Allegheny County Chief Executive tweets that there is a small power outage in the East Carnegie neighborhood of Scott Township. Outage is reported near Noblestown Road, Norland Avenue and Doolittle Street.

9:02 p.m. – Police and firefighters respond to an accident involving injuries on Washington Avenue in Scott Township near the Dairy Queen. Report of a minor head injury. Traffic on Route 50 is being rerouted at the Family Video/Bottom Dollar due to the car accident.

8:38 p.m. – National Weather Service reports that wind damage brought down a tree along Oakridge Road in South Fayette. Emergency crews responding to the scene.

7:53 p.m. – Chartiers Valley School District announces it has canceled all classes for Tuesday.

6:00 p.m. – National Weather Service in Pittsburgh upgrades flood advisory to a flood warning in Allegheny County and surrounding areas. The warning is focused on small streams and urban areas.
