Heidelberg Excited About New Blueprint

The borough is working with Scott and Carnegie on a comprehensive plan that will promote creek recreation, walking paths and biking trails.

People living in Heidelberg are getting excited about the new multi-municipal comprehensive plan that tries to spruce up the neighborhoods and promotes more recreation by the Chartiers Creek.

“It takes Heidelberg past the streetscape project,” borough Manager Joe Kauer said alluding to the $2.2 million project that runs through the heart of Heidelberg. “It’s using the streetscape as a catalyst and how we can use the properties better.”

The borough council during its Tuesday night meeting formally adopted the long-range plan that also combines ideas with neighboring Scott Township and Carnegie. It’s the first time the borough has put together a comprehensive plan.

One of the biggest characteristics they want to improve is access and recreation activities to the creek. Kauer pointed to some parts of the plan that suggest a canoe docking area and fishing areas.

Other ideas would include walking trails or improved bike paths using existing infrastructure making it easier to get around.

“It’s more than a lamp post,” Kauer said. “We want it to be a blueprint to move Heidelberg forward and something we can envision 30 years from now.”

Kauer said they probably will have to revise many of their zoning laws to comply with the changes.
