Chartiers Valley Superintendent Brian White Jr. released a statement Saturday morning on the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
He offered his condolences to the families involved and offered resources for how Chartiers Valley parents can talk to their kids about the tragedy.

Dear Parents, Employees and Community Members,
Our thoughts are with the families impacted by the tragic loss of life in Connecticut. This tragedy is difficult for anyone, especially children, to comprehend.
A resource you may find useful is "Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers" From the National Association of School Psychologist. Please be open to listening to your children talk about their feelings and reaction to this incident.
I, like you, am deeply disturbed by the events in Connecticut. When an incident this significant occurs, it makes us take time to reassess our own protocols and security measures. Therefore, we will be reviewing our security, security procedures and preventative measures.

As parents have you discussed with you children what to do if a shooting situation happened in school or in public? It's a shame but times are changing and we need to start protecting are love ones ... Do you as a adult have a plan if you are out and some one starts shooting ?

I am very thankful my child goes to Chartiers Valley. We had a dance for the middle school students last night and Chartiers Valley administrative officials were proactive and had two police officers present to put both the parents and students mind at ease. Unfortunately these tragedies can happen anywhere. But I feel CV is always looking for ways to prevent such tragedies at our schools.

I know that many parents tend to keep this kind of information from their children, which is understandable. But the fact of the matter is, you can't protect your kids from hearing bits and pieces about this tragedy from peers and classmates and such, which is why I make a point of discussing these things factually with my children and answering their questions. I would rather they get their facts straight from me instead of finding out by hearing information from other children that might be innaccurate and perhaps blown out of proportion, which I think would acutally be a scarier way to learn about this tragedy.

Trying to reach out to CV officials, but have not been able to talk to them yet today.
