Collier Expanding Recycling Pick-Up

Collier Township is expanding its recycling and making it more convenient for residents next year.
The garbage collection change to Republic will offer a “significant savings” to the township and allow each household to dump all of its recyclable items into a single blue tub.
Collier Township Manager Sal Sirabella said the switch will make recycling much easier for residents since they can dump cans, glass, plastic, newspapers, cardboard and even egg and milk cartons in the same bin. Residents previously had to separate items in blue bags and leave them at the curb.
“You can fit it all in the tub,” Sirabella said. “You have more convenience.”
Sirabella thinks the ease of the 32-gallon tub will promote more recycling in the community. An increase in recycling will boost the amount of state grant money eligible to the township.
“We’ve been pitifully low,” Sirabella said. “I think we’ll be able to recoup some money from that (state grant program) by making it a little more convenient.”
Residents will receive their blue recycling tubs in mid-December. A letter will be sent to each household so people can know what to expect from the recycling changes.
Sirabella said the township will be spending about $500,000 on garbage collection and recycling costs in the final year of the five-year contract, which is the same as it’s currently spending.
