The Chartiers Valley Colts lost to West Allegheny 48-0 on Friday night in what was Chris Saluga's final game as head coach.

Saluga announced he was resigning as Chartiers Valley’s football coach, but he still was on the sidelines for the final game of the season.

Saluga, who has coached the Colts for the past 12 years and has the most wins in school history, told the team after practice Thursday.

He said there was no single reason why he’s leaving, but he thought it would be best for both sides to start fresh.

“I just think it’s the best for me and the program,” Saluga told Chartiers Valley Patch.

Chartiers Valley has had a disappointing season after moving to the powerhouse Parkway Conference this year. The Colts finished the season 2-7 and had only one conference win.

Saluga said he’s not sure what he’ll do after leaving Chartiers Valley, but he still wants to coach again one day.

“I still want to coach, but I might step back for a little,” Saluga said. “Maybe I’ll look at an assistant (coaching) job, or I might pursue a head coaching job if the right opportunity comes along.”

Chartiers Valley Athletic Director Frank Vulcano Jr. said the search for a new coach will begin immediately after the school board formally accepts Saluga’s resignation. That could happen early next month.
