Chartiers Valley has hired a new varsity football coach.

Niel Loebig, an assistant offensive coach at Duquesne University, was hired Tuesday night by the Chartiers Valley School Board.

Loebig, who graduated from South Fayette High School in 2000, spent last year at Duquesne as the passing game coordinator and receivers coach. Loebig also played quarterback at Duquesne before graduating with an education degree from the school in 2005.

“We believe Coach Loebig’s years of experience combined with his skills and qualifications will make him an asset to the Chartiers Valley football program,” Superintendent Brian White Jr. said in a statement.

According to Duquesne athletic department’s website, Loebig threw for more than 10,000 yards and 103 touchdowns while quarterback at the university. He then spent the next five years as quarterbacks coach at Duquesne. He transferred to Lely High School in Naples, FL, and was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for one season in 2011 before returning to Duquesne last year.

Athletic Director Frank Vulcano Jr. said Loebig has not been offered a full-time teaching position as of now, but he will receive a stipend of $10,371 to coach this year. Vulcano praised his skills as an offensive coach.

“Coming from the collegiate level working with the offense, there’s a lot to like with him coming here,” Vulcano said. “We’re just happy to have him at Char Valley.”

Loebig, 30, takes over the Colts football team after former head coach Chris Saluga resigned following the last football game in 2012. Saluga spent 12 seasons as head coach and had the most wins in school history.
